SACKS JOINS SABCO RACING TEAM

Greg Sacks will drive Pontiacs fielded by Sabco Racing this year on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit, the team announced.

``Greg is a hard charger. He can hustle a car around the track, and I like that,'' said the team's co-owner, Dick Brooks, a former competitor in stock car racing's major league. ``We share the same philosophy.

``We were looking for a driver that we could put in the car and turn loose. That's exactly what we've found.''

Sacks, who won Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway in 1984, replaces Bobby Hamilton as driver for the second-year team.

``I'm really looking forward to this season,'' Sacks said. ``To have an opportunity to work for an owner like Dick Brooks who knows what it's like to drive a race ca, and have a crew chief the caliber of Jeff Hammond, the combination is terrific.''

Sacks, 42, who drove last season for D.K. Ulrich, has two career poles, three top-five and 20 top-10 finishes in 12 years of Winston Cup racing.

One of Sacks' poles came at the Hooters 500, the last event of the 1994 season. It made him eligible for the Busch Clash, the annual event for pole winners of the previous season.

Sacks' appearance in the non-points race, scheduled Feb.12 at Daytona, will be the third of his career. He got in once when his name was drawn from among the fastest second-day qualifiers of the previous season.

The clash is the first NASCAR staple of Speedweeks, which concludes this year with the Feb.19 running of the Daytona 500.
