DULL, Howard Lewis, 84, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 2, 1995. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen D. Dull, his parents, L. H. and Janie Dull, and brother, Sidney Dull, and son, Lewis Dull. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Elaine Dull, Richmond, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Robert Haynes, Roanoke, Kaye and Frank Sellers, Salem; six grandchildren, Frank Sellers, Steve Sellers, Sarah Haynes, Melissa Haynes, Bobby Haynes and Mathew Dull. A funeral service will be conducted 12 noon Wednesday, January 4, 1995, from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. DUNCAN, Henry J., 72, of 613 Wells Street, Pulaski, died Sunday, January 1, 1995 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Draper, Va. on September 24, 1922, and was the son of the late Cleve G. Duncan and Lena S. Duncan. Mr. Duncan was a former Pulaski County baseball player and a former Henrico County, Va. Sheriff. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #292 in Henrico County, a lifetime member of the National Sheriff's Association, a lifetime member of the Virginia Sheriff's Association and a lifetime member of the Henrico Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 4. He was also a member of the Pulaski American Legio n Post #7, Pulaski VFW #1184, and Pulaski Moose Lodge. Mr. Duncan was a veteran of WWII and a part-time Deputy Sheriff of Pulaski County. Surviving are a son, Richard H. Duncan, Dublin; one brother, Kenneth Duncan, Grand Rapids, Mich.; three grandchildren, Yvette Duncan Wheeling, Salem, Christy Duncan Nation, Salem, Monique Duncan, Fincastle; and one great-grandchild, Joshua Wheeling, Salem. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from the Dublin Cemetery, Dublin, Va., with the Rev. Clarence Cook officiating. FLETCHER, Hugh Jr., (``Pete""), 62, of Smith Mountain Lake, died Sunday, January 1, 1995 at his home. He was a graduate of VPI and served as a Captain in the U. S. Army Artilliary. He was retired as Vice-President of Banking with Dominion Bankshares and was founder and CEO of Snappy Food Marts. He served on the Advisory Council of the College of Business at VPI, and on the Board of Visitors at VPI. He served on the Board of the Virgina Food Dealer's Association and was Chairman of the Board of Quality Foods Co-Op. He served as president of the Fine Arts Museum, was an Eagle Scout, and was a former member of the Roanoke Rotary Club. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Cyndi Fletcher, Salem; daughter and son-in-law, Breslin and Doug Mowles, Roanoke; five grandchildren, Will and Claiborne Fletcher, Daniel, Andrew, and Amanda Mowles; wife, Betty Ruth Cundiff Fletcher; sister-in-law, Barbara C. Newbill; stepfather, William W. Krebs, Roanoke; two stepsisters, Irene Krebs Potter, Northern Virginia, Eva J. Krebs, San Francisco; stepbrother, William J. JOHNSTON, Dr. George Burke, 87, of Lynchburg, formerly of Blacksburg, died Sunday, January 1, 1995 at Westminster Canterbury. Dr. Johnston was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on September 8, 1907 to the late George Doherty and Eleanor McCorvey Johnston. Dr. Johnston was a graduate of the University of Alabama and Columbia University. Dr. Johnston taught at the University of Alabama and at Virginia Tech, where he was the Dean of the Arts and Sciences. He w as also a veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Mary Tabb Lancaster Johnston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth Carrington and C. Lloyd Lipscomb III, Lynchburg, and Mary Tabb and Fred O. Schubert, Charlottesville; two sons, Thomas McCorvey Johnston, Fairfax, and George Burke Johnston Jr., St. Marys, Ga.; three grandchildren, William H. Lipscomb, Seattle, Wash., George Burke Lipscomb, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Thomas Lloyd Lipscomb, Charlottesville. LYON, Marion Errold, Sr., 76, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Sunday, January 1, 1995. Mr. Lyon served in the Fourth Division U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War and World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carrye C. Lyon, and his second wife, Alice B. Lyon. He was an active member of Northview United Methodist Church. MILLER, Alsee, of 2921 Glenrose Ave., Roanoke, departed this life Sunday, January 1, 1995 at his residence. Born September 8, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late James (Jim) Miller and the late Mrs. Sallie Wray Miller. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Naamon Miller and John D. Miller. Prior to his retirement on disability, he was employed by Valley Cadillac & Oldsmobile Co. in Roanoke, was an Army veteran, a former member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church and a current member of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Roanoke. He is survived by his wife, Shirley C. Miller, of the residence; three daughters, Vickie Miller, Lavern M. Lark and husband, Leroy, and Debra M. Pannell and husband, Herbert Jr., all of Roanoke; five brothers, James A. Miller, Irvington, N.J., Gordon Miller, Jack Miller and Latane Miller, all of Gretna, and David Miller, Petersburg; four sisters, Lucille Hall, Charlottesville, Minnie A. Edwards, Roanoke, Virginia Glass, Java, and Catherine M. Coleman, Danville; five grandchildren, Dwayne and Shenita Miller, Latoya and Lakeisha Lark and Tiffany Pannell, all of Roanoke; 11 sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends. RAY, Donald LLoyd, 60, of Patrick Springs, Va., died Wednesday, December 28, 1994. He was born November 4, 1934, a son of the late William Carl Ray and the late Calla Donithan Ray. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, William Carl Ray (Toodle), and Houston Charles Ray, and a sister, Priscilla Ray. Surviving are his wife, Violet Sifford Ray, Patrick Springs; a son, Terry N. Ray, Patrick Springs; sisters, Doris R. Eaton, Blacksburg, and Betty Jane R. Eaton, Newport. Services were held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, Stuart Va., Friday, December 30, with interment at the Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery, Patrick Springs.
RAY, Dr. Sam Ward Jr., a distinguished Norfolk Educator, died Sunday, January 1, 1995 at the Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C. Dr. Ray, 74, was a native of Marion, Va. He had been a resident of Norfolk since 1942. Dr. Ray graduated from Appalachian State University and received his Masters and Doctoral degrees from New York University. He had additional graduate work at the University of Virginia and the College of William and Mary. After serving in the Pacific as a naval officer in World War II, Dr. Ray returned to Norfolk as a teacher in the Norfolk Public Schools. In 1985, after a 39 year career as a teacher, principal and administrator, he retired as deputy superintendent for the Norfolk Public Schools. He was a member of many professional organizations and was the recipient of numerous professional honors. Dr. Ray was an active member of his church, the Second Presbyterian Church of Norfolk, serving as an Elder for 32 years. At his death, he was chairman of the Tidewater Westminister Homes, Inc. of the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia. Dr. Ray was an active participant and leader in the Tidewater area, serving as past President of the Optimist Club of Norfolk, past Governor of the Capital-Virginia District of Optimist International, past President of the Norfolk-Virginia Beach Executive Club, past Chairman of the YMCA of Norfolk, past Vice-Chairman of the Tidewater Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and past President of the Children's Camp and Care Fund. Recently, he has been Chairman of Drug Education and Prevention for the Norfolk Public Schools. He was also active in many other civic organizations. Amo ng his many honors, he received the Distinguished Educator Award presented by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Governor's Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. He was a member of the Norfolk Sport Club, Redwing Seniors Golf Association and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. Dr. Ray was the son of the late Sam Ward Ray and Jenny Todd Ray. He is survived by his wife, Anne McLean Ray; a daughter, Carol Ray Stokes of Richmond; a son, Richard Todd Ray of Virginia Beach; a brother, Joseph W. Clawson of Marion, Va.; and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Second Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, January 4, 1994, at 2 p.m. Burial will be private in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. ROBERTS, William Emmett, 65, of Montvale, died Monday, January 2, 1995, in Montvale. Mr. Roberts was born in Madison Heights on December 18, 1929, a son of the late Fletcher Alexander Roberts and Floy Warner Roberts. Mr. Roberts was a retired aircraft mechanic and a member of the Glen L. Martin Aviation Museum. He was twice married, first to Della Carter, and second to Phyllis Roberts. He is survived by nine children, Mrs. Jimmie (Frances) Humphrey of Montvale; Mrs. Steve (Janice) Reed of Troutville, Lee and Jenny Roberts of Montvale, R. Michael Johnson of Abingdon, Md., Mrs. Jeff (Barbara) Barber of Montvale, Connie Epperly of Roanoke, Mrs. Ralph (Patricia) Campbell of Goode, Mrs. Steve (Paula) Franklin of Lynchburg, Mrs. William (Dawn) Schneider of Delta, Pa.; three brothers, Maurice Roberts of Defuniak Springs, Fla, Paul Roberts of Dallas, Texas, Charles Roberts of Madison Heights; a sister, Mrs. Marie Starke of Atlanta, Ga.; fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
