DUBLIN EXPRESS STOP KEEPS BASKETBALL STREAK GOING

Dublin Express Stop has yet to be stopped.

The defending champion in the Pulaski Men's Basketball League extended its league-record winning streak to 51 games in recent action.

TIM PENN went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the second half as DES came from behind to knock off L.R. Davis 61-49.

Overall, Dublin Express Stop made 15-of-21 foul shots in the second half. Those points helped it battle back from a 25-19 deficit at intermission.

DES is one of three teams that was still unbeaten as the league took a break for the holidays. Also perfect are Stevens Funeral Home and Bad Boys. All three teams are 3-0.

Stevens went over the century mark twice as it topped BBA and EPR.

Former Radford University star RON SHELBURNE had 29 points - one of four Stevens players with more than 20 - as Stevens turned back BBA Friction 105-75. LARRY FOX added 24, RANDY OLVERSON 22 and DENNIS SHREWSBERRY 20.

Against Electroplate Rite, Shelburne had 24 to lead Stevens to a 104-76 win. MARK WILEY had 18 and Shrewsberry 17.

Meanwhile, the Bad Boys got victories over McDonald's and Electroplate Rite.

Thirteen was the key number in the 61-47 win over McDonald's. MONTE BROWN scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the first half, and the Bad Boys defense allowed only 13 points before intermission.

Against EPR, Brown scored 21 in the second half, including a trio of three-pointers down the stretch that led to a 76-69 win. Brown finished with 29 points while CHUCK WEBB and GEORGE GULLEY each added 15.

Two players reached the 1,000-point plateaus for their careers.

RONNIE HORTON of Electroplate Rite scored 23 in the 104-76 loss to Stevens to reach the milestone.

STEVE VEST of C&L Campers went over the mark when he scored 14 points in a 105-56 win over McDonald's.

There are more players to add to the list of former collegiate competitors in the league.

Dublin Express Stop/Dublin Fitness Center has JEROME BROWN and CHARLES ARNOLD, who played at Bluefield College, and MIKE BURTON, who played at Radford University.

LEE AYERS of Heilig Meyers also played at Bluefield College. Meanwhile, TIM GOETZ of L.R. Davis saw action for the Virginia Tech junior varsity and DAVID VENNE of Pepsi Cola played on the University of Wisconsin junior varsity.

Last but not least, there is MIKE SAMSON. The former George Washington University player and ex-European professional is the only former Olympian in the league. He was on Great Britain's national team in 1980 and 1984.

Three of the four top scoring performances of the week came in losses.

JOHN AKERS of EPR, JOEY BOWER of PowerAde, MIKE WORRELL of McDonald's and WALTER BROOKS of C&L Campers each had 33-point games. Only Brooks' team emerged victorious: 105-56 over McDonald's.

There were two other 30-point performances in the week. They, too, had mixed results. MIKE HUDSON of Pulaski Hospital scored 31 points in a losing effort. Meanwhile, a 30-point game by TIM VIA led C&L Campers over Pepsi Cola 81-55.

CASTING KIDS: Where did PATRICIA DAVENPORT and DEREK WEBB learn to cast?

Anyone who has ever tried to put a fishing line in the water would like to be as proficient in the art of casting as those two youths. The pair won their age groups at the Southwestern Virginia Bassmasters Third Annual Casting Kids competition at New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg recently.

The youths competed in flipping, pitching and casting. Club members taught the three techniques in a clinic before the meet.

Davenport, 9, of Newbern, won the 7-10 age group. Webb, 11, of Radford, emerged victorious in the 11-14 age division. Both received a medallion and a spincast rod and reel set for their victories. And both qualified for the Jan. 28 state competition at the Bassarama Show at the State Fairgrounds in Richmond.
