FIELDALE-COLLINSVILLE SLIPS BY MARTINSVILLE

Delvin Joyce made two free throws with nine seconds left to help lift Fieldale-Collinsville to a 62-59 victory over Martinsville on Tuesday, handing the Bulldogs their first Piedmont District loss.

The Cavaliers (7-3 overall, 6-1 district) led by five points in the fourth quarter, but Martinsville tied the score and had a chance to take the lead with 30 seconds left before a turnover killed its chances.

Michael Martin, who scored 19 points, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie it. Martinsville (6-2, 6-1) also got 15 points from Manti Venable and 14 from Carlos Martin.

The Cavaliers, who made 15 of 24 free throws; the Bulldogs made seven of 14.

Martinsville was led by Nat Law, who scored a game-high 23. Joyce finished with 10.

MARTINSVILLE - Warrick Scott and Girard Foster each scored 17 points each to lead the Lancers over the Cavaliers.

Ronte Davis added 11 points and Corie Wilson chipped in another 10, including one three-pointer as Laurel Park rolled to its sixth district victory.

Scott Whitt led the Cavaliers in scoring with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Jeremy Clark also connected on three 3-point goals, finishing with 11 points. Terrace Martin added 10 points for Chatham.

BUCHANAN - The Cougars built their lead to 14 points after three quarters and held off James River in the Pioneer District opener for both teams.

Shahan Burrell had 10 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Knights (1-5, 0-1) got as close as three points. Cory Whittaker had 20 points for Covington (4-3, 1-0).

LOW MOOR - Alleghany's Donnie Costigan hit three straight 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Mountaineers outscored Rockbridge 19-4 en route to the Blue Ridge District victory.

Rashad Worth scored 19 points to pace the Mountaineers (8-1, 1-0), and James Hughes, who sat out the first half with foul trouble, scored 17 in second half.

Jason Remillard led the Wildcats (0-8, 0-1) with 18 points.

Tunstall 74

Bassett 62

BASSETT- Tunstall blasted out of the gates to a 26-11 first quarter lead and cruised to a victory over Bassett (4-4) in the Piedmont District.

Rontae Harris led all scorers with 24 points for the Trojans, including three 3-pointers. Derrick Rogers added 17, and Linwood Petty tossed in 15 for Tunstall.

Chris and Tyree Hairston combined for 34 of the Bengals' 62 points. Chris Hairston poured in 23 points, including two from 3-point range, and Tyree Hairston added 11.

Carlisle 83

MARTINSVILLE - Carlisle came back strong from its only loss of the season and remained unbeaten in the Virginia Independent Conference.

Tony Joyce of the Celtics (1-8, 1-2) led all scorers with 21 points, but Carlisle (7-1, 5-0) had balance with four players scoring either 17 or 18 points.

Ron Hairston and Joseph McClinton each scored 18 for Carlisle, which led 18-15 after the first quarter but outscored the visitors 50-23 in the final two periods.

Grayson County 56

HILLSVILLE - Casey McCreary hit seven of eight free throws in the last 40 seconds as Carroll County upset Grayson County in a non-district game.

McCreary finished with 11 points and center Anthony Thomas added 13 for the Cavaliers (4-5), who managed hold the Blue Devils' high-scoring duo of Bryan Boyer and Chad Shaffner to 12 points.

Wes Self led Grayson County (7-2) with a game-high 23 points, but scored just two in the fourth quarter.
