MINUTEMEN SHOOT DOWN AMHERST

Liberty used an 11-point run to end the game as it downed Amherst 65-63 in the Seminole District Tuesday night.

Mike Padgett scored the go-ahead layup with 15 seconds left to ice the victory for the Minutemen (7-1 overall, 7-1 district). Padgett led Liberty with 14 points. Kris Ridgeway scored 11 points, including two 3-pointers, and Greg Reynolds and Raymond Arrington each scored 10 points.

Scott Christian led all scorers with 28 points for the Lancers (6-2, 6-2). Richard Apperson added 14 points, Joey McDowell scored 10.

Franklin County 50

ROCKY MOUNT - Matt Matheny had 26 points and 12 rebounds as the Knights rolled over the Eagles in the Roanoke Valley District opener for both teams.

Matheny battered Franklin County inside by scoring 16 points in the first half. He had eight offensive rebounds and hit two 3-pointers.

Dusty Beekman hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 16 points, and John Finnerty scored 10 for Cave Spring (7-4, 1-0), which outscored the Eagles 45-23 in the second half. The Knights made 20 of 23 free-throw attempts.

K.C. Hancock led Franklin County (6-3, 0-1) with 15 points. Carlos Holland had 13.

Carroll County 59

Grayson County 56

HILLSVILLE - Casey McCreary hit seven of eight free throws in the last 40 seconds as Carroll County beat Grayson County in a non-district game.

McCreary finished with 11 points, and center Anthony Thomas added 13 for the Cavaliers (4-5), who managed hold the Blue Devils' high-scoring duo of Bryan Boyer and Chad Shaffner to 12 points.

Wes Self led Grayson County (7-2) with a game-high 23 points.

Radford 53

Fort Chiswell 48

RADFORD - Chuck Hubbard scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and D.J. Jones added 14 points and six rebounds to lead Radford past Fort Chiswell in a non-district game.

Hubbard scored 11 of his 15 in the second half and Jones chipped in 12 of his 14 in the second half as the Bobcats (4-3) held on after leading by 10 in the third quarter.

Jody Burnett led Fort Chiswell (3-3) with 21 points.

Auburn 66

Bland 58

RINER - The Eagles made 10 of 12 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to drop the Rockets in a non-district matchup.

Auburn (7-2) saw a 20-point second-half lead cut to six with four minutes to play before putting away Bland (1-2).

Jon Reed scored 24 points, and Terry Millirons had 14 to pace the Eagles. David Lambert had 17 for Bland.

Narrows 79

Giles 73

PEARISBURG - Patrick Bailey scored a game-high 27 points and hit five 3-pointers to help Narrows sweep the regular season series with arch-rival Giles in a non-district game.

Bailey scored 12 of his 27 in the third quarter, and Scott Vaught added seven of his 16 in the third as the Green Wave (4-2) out scored Giles 29-20 in the third quarter. Narrows held on in the fourth after Greg Robertson, who finished with 11 points, hit three of four free throws late in the game.

Giles (2-4) was led by Josh Stephens, who scored 15 points, and Aaron Myers added 13.
