CHRISTIANSBURG - The Miss New River Scholarship Pageant Committee seeks contestants for its annual pageant March 4 at Christiansburg High School.
Eligible contestants must be 17 to 25 years old and be residents of the New River Valley or attend a local college or university.
The pageant includes a private interview, talent, swimsuit and evening gown competition.
The new Miss New River Valley receives a $1,000 scholarship and competes in the Miss Virginia Pageant, a preliminary to the Miss America Pageant.

Early-childhood grant
RICHMOND - The New River Valley Association for the Education of Young Children will award a $375 scholarship to an early childhood professional.
The scholarship will cover registration, transportation and lodging expenses for the annual Virginia Association of Early Childhood Education conference, March 22-25, in Richmond.
The scholarship recipient will also receive membership in the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Southern Early Childhood Association, the Virginia Association for Early Childhood Education and the New River Valley Association for the Education of Young Children.
Applicants must be able to attend the conference and work directly with children 15 or more hours a week.
Applications need to be submitted by Jan.16 and should include two letters of recommendation.

Story times resume
CHRISTIANSBURG - Story times resume Monday, Jan. 16, at the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library. Sessions are free and registration is not required. Youngsters visiting the area are welcome.

Tourism loans
CHRISTIANSBURG - Southwest Development Financing Inc. is accepting loan applications from businesses and organizations that need money to make tourism-related ideas work.
The nonprofit organization, funded by $1 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Farmers Home Administration, provides loans at below-market interest rates.
Businesses, local government and other groups may be eligible for $50,000 to $90,000 loans depending on the type of project, the number of jobs created and other factors, said Jerry Brown, the corporation's director. So far, the corporation has received only two applications, but expects more by spring at the start of the tourism season.

Tree pickups
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Christiansburg Public Works Department will collect discarded Christmas trees along with regular trash service Jan. 9 through 13.
Residents are asked to place trees at the edge of the street by 8 a.m. with trash on their regular collection day.
The department will also collect trees discarded in the recycling centers in the New River Valley Mall parking lot near Peebles.
State park passes
RICHMOND - Annual passes for parking, swimming and boat launching at Virginia State Parks are now on sale at the Department of Conservation and Recreation and selected parks.
