EXPRESS LOSES DEFENSEMAN TO MINNESOTA

Roanoke Express defenseman Michael Smith has been recalled by the Minnesota Moose of the International Hockey League. Smith will join goaltender Dave Gagnon who was recalled by the Moose on Tuesday.

Smith, who had been signed to a three-game tryout by Minnesota last week, will join the Moose today in Atlanta. The East Coast Hockey League All-Star recorded one assist for Minnesota in two games before being reassigned to the Express. He led Roanoke's defensemen with three goals, 24 assists for 27 points and 24 penalty minutes in 30 games.

Express officials are expected to announce today the signing of former Johnstown goalie John Bradley. Bradley allowed 143 goals in 36 games and averaged 4.68 goals per game last season. He had 16 wins, 13 losses and two overtime losses.

In other sports news in the region:

nMike Fisher, a midfielder for the Virginia Cavaliers, has been named as one of three finalists for the 1994 Hermann Trophy, which recognizes college soccer's top player.

Indiana's Todd Yeagley and Brian Maisonneuve are the other finalists.

Two other Virginia players have won the Hermann Trophy: Tony Meola in 1989 and Claudio Reyna in 1993.
