Botetourt to begin prorating taxes
Botetourt County has begun prorating taxes effective Jan. 1.
Prorating taxes means that no matter when in the year a vehicle is purchased, taxes must be paid on it. The commissioner of revenue's office will charge car owners beginning with the date of purchase.
When a vehicle is purchased - whether it is new or used - it must be registered with the commissioner's office within 30 days. This filing can be done by phone, by mail or in person.
Failure to file will mean a late penalty fee equal to 10 percent of the taxes due or $10, whichever is greater.
New forms which combine personal property bills and decals will be mailed out for each vehicle in the county by the end of February. All forms are due April 15.
Any questions about vehicle decals or taxes should be directed to Steven I. Wampler, commissioner of revenue, at 992-8270 or 473-8270. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
