EX-PITCHER FOR SENATORS DIES

Former major-league pitcher Mickey Haefner, who spent most of his career with the Washington Senators in the 1940s, died Tuesday in New Athens, Ill. He was 82.

The left-hander compiled a 78-91 won-lost record with a 3.50 ERA.

Haefner played with the Senators from 1943-49, going 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA during his rookie season in 1943. His highest win total was 16 in 1945, when the Senators finished one game behind American League champion Detroit.

Former pitcher Harry Gumbert, who played for four major league teams, is dead at the age of 85.

Gumbert played in the major leagues for 15 years and pitched for the New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. He played in two World Series with the Giants, in 1936 and '37, and one with the Cardinals, in 1942. He was 143-113 in his career and had a 3.68 ERA.
