FAST START PROPELS SALEM TO VICTORY

Salem bolted to a 15-6 first-quarter lead and never trailed in defeating Blacksburg 60-48 in a non-district boys' high school basketball game Thursday night.

The Spartans (2-4) extended their lead to 28-15 at halftime. Kevin Garst led Salem with 16 points and Matt Woolwine added 14.

Blacksburg (2-5) got as close as eight points in the final minutes. Tony Wheeler and Philip Klaus led the Indians with 16 points each.

MARTINSVILLE - Just call Brian Whitaker 3-Point Man.

Whitaker sank six 3-pointers, including three in the game's final three minutes as North Cross defeated Carlisle in the Virginia Independent Conference.

The Raiders jumped out to a 35-29 lead at halftime. Carlisle (7-2, 4-1) drew within two in the third period, but Whitaker's 3-pointers sealed the victory.

William Watkins chipped in 16 points for North Cross (4-4, 2-1) and John Prillaman added 14.
