CONFERENCE TO LOOK AT HARASSMENT IN SCHOOLS

Following up on a survey suggesting rampant sexual harrassment in schools, the Blacksburg branch of the American Association of University Women plans to examine the issue at the third annual Educational Equity Conference later this month at Virginia Tech.

The 1993 AAUW-commissioned study of sexual harassment in schools, "Hostile Hallways," surveyed over 1,500 students in grades 8 through 11 on their experiences. Over 80 percent reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment in school, ranging from sexual comments, jokes, gestures and rumors to touching or grabbing in a sexual way; forced sexual acts and other unwanted sexual acts.
