NAMES & CHANGES

Former banker joins law firm

BROADDUS C. FITZPATRICK has joined Coleman & Massey, a Roanoke law firm. He previously worked as an estate planner and trust specialist for First Union National Bank of Virginia. Before that, he was vice president of Dominion Trust Co.

He will be Of Counsel to Coleman & Massey, which concentrates in estate planning, probabe, business and tax matters.

Fitzpatrick is a member of the Virginia State Bar, the Roanoke Bar Association and the Roanoke Valley Estate Planning Council.

ARCHITECTS

JOHN W. DREILING and HELENE COMBS DREILING haved formed the Dreiling Partnership Architects P.C. based in Roanoke. Formerly Helene Combs Dreiling AIA P.C., the firm specializes in residential remodeling and additions, new houses, religious facilities and small commercial projects. John Dreiling previously was a project manager and administrative manager with Motley + Associates in Roanoke. Helene Dreiling is president of AIA Blue Ridge, a chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

BANKING

As part of its restructuring plan, Piedmont BankGroup Inc. has named LEON A. "CHIP" LACKEY JR. vice president/corporate marketing and KAREN H. HARRIS vice president/human resources.

Lackey joined the bank holding company's affiliate, Piedmont Trust Bank in Martinsville, in 1972 in marketing. He was named marketing officer in 1974 and was promoted to vice president/marketing in 1981. In his new position, Lackey will be responsible for corporate and shareholder communications, corporate marketing services for the six affiliate banks of Piedmont BankGroup, strategic marketing development and product development.

Harris joined Piedmont Trust Bank in 1992 as human resources officer. She had been employed with Florida National Banks in Jacksonville, Fla., for nine years. Her new responsibilities include recruiting, employee relations, payroll, benefit plan design, equal employment opportunity/affirmative action compliance, salary administration and systemwide training.

Signet Bank has promoted C. WAYNE PENICK to executive vice president of educational funding. He will be responsible for managing Signet's national student lending business. Penick joined Signet in 1972 as a loan officer in Roanoke. He later became an area manager in Danville and Lynchburg before moving to Richmond in 1982 as a vice president of commercial banking. While in Richmond, he was officer-in-charge of private banking and retail banking and president of Signet Insurance Services Inc. He moved to moved to Maryland in 1991 and became officer-in-charge of educational funding.

HEALTH CARE

The Roanoke Regional Medical Group Manager's Association has elected new officers for 1995: JIM PALAZZO, Consultants in Cardiology, president; CATHERINE "KITT" CUMBIE, Valley Nephrology Associates Ltd., vice president; BECKY DARBY, Parkway Physicians, treasurer; YVONNE VAUGHT, Valley Pathology Associates, secretary; BRENDA ANDERSON, Neurosurgery Inc., membership; and GINGER TANNER, Roanoke Family Medicine, marketing.

MEDIA

C. VAUGHN PORTER, continuous improvement coordinator at the Roanoke Times & World-News, has retired. Porter joined the newspaper in 1969 as data processing manager. In 1976 he became personnel manager (later renamed human resources director), and he became coordinator of the company's total quality management process in 1992. He also helped organize and served as first president of the Western Virginia Quality Council. Before joining the newspaper, Porter worked at First National Exchange Bank and Coleman Furniture Co.
