EX-PUBLISHER, CORRESPONDENT HARKRADER DIES

Carleton A. Harkrader, a former newspaper publisher, Newsweek magazine correspondent and lawyer, died Friday after a bout with cancer. He was 77.

Harkrader died at his Great Falls, Va., home, family members said.

Born in Bristol, Va., and a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, Harkrader started a news career as a mailer for the Bristol Herald-Courier, a newspaper owned by his father, Charles J. Harkrader.

After covering events in Europe and the Middle East in 1945 and 1946 for Newsweek, he returned to the Herald-Courier as its executive editor and publisher, posts he held until 1951, when he turned to law.

Harkrader is survived by his wife, Doris, four children, a brother, two sisters and five grandchildren.
