BEANS SPILLED IN HARDY TRAIN DERAILMENT

A train derailed in Hardy about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, damaging 14 rail cars and three locomotives and spewing soybeans around the site.

The Norfolk Southern Corp. train, headed from Indiana to Raleigh, N.C., derailed one-half mile from the Bay Rock Marina in Hardy, Norfolk Southern spokesman Bob Auman said.

The train wheels apparently slipped on some gravel dirt that spilled from a bluff onto the track, Auman said.

Two members of the North Carolina crew were taken to Community Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

Auman estimated damage to the train cars at $600,000.

He said crews were out all night clearing debris on the Roanoke-to-Altavista route. Meanwhile, trains were being re-routed to Lynchburg.
