SZABO RETURNING TO THE EXPRESS

LAST SEASON'S most valuable player is coming back to Roanoke.

\ Tony Szabo, who led the Roanoke Express in scoring last season before joining a professional hockey team in Scotland, will be returning to the Express for the remainder of the 1994-95 ECHL season.

The team is expected to make the announcement during a press conference this afternoon.

Szabo was voted the team's most valuable player last year after leading the Express in scoring with 96 points, the seventh-highest total in the league. His 46 goals were second-most on the team. He has spent this season with Fife, a Scottish pro club.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound forward should make an immediate impact for the Express, which has watched some of its best players leave town in recent weeks.

Last month, leading scorer Pat Ferschweiler was signed to a 25-game tryout by the Kansas City Blades of the International Hockey League. Top goaltender Dave Gagnon signed a 25-game tryout with the IHL's Minnesota Moose last week.

Both IHL teams have working affiliations with the Express, but neither has sent a replacement player to Roanoke.

In other player moves, defenseman Michael Smith has been reassigned to the Express after completing his three-game tryout with Minnesota. He will join the team today and is expected to play Tuesday when the Express entertains Hampton Roads.
