3 SCHOOLS IN VALLEY RECEIVE ARTS GRANTS

The Virginia Commission for the Arts recently awarded Arts in the Basic Curriculum grants of $300 each to three schools in the New River Valley.

A statewide panel reviewed 265 proposals and distributed $34,000 in program funds among 118 recipients. The grants will fund projects that incorporate innovative art into the basic curriculum.

Peggy Davie and Susan Wameley of AUBURN HIGH AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS will use their grant to help the sixth-grade language arts class make a video of the history of Riner using old photographs and information from interviews with older members of the community.

At the BLACKSBURG NEW SCHOOL, teachers Martha Facemire, Amy Fuller, Natalie Quesenberry and Katrina Young will invite a local artist to help kindergarten through fourth-grade pupils create a covered wagon on the school playground as part of a unit on 19th-century America and westward expansion.

RINER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL teachers Margaret Francisco, Kathleen Pecic, Carol Wellington and Regina Howard are adding an art project to the social studies curriculum for second-graders and fifth-graders. The pupils will make a ceramic quilt using traditional Appalachian quilt patterns.

Montgomery County Public Schools announced SENIORS OF THE MONTH for January.

BRADLEY HUDGINS of Auburn High School is a four-year varsity basketball player and a three-year varsity baseball team member. He is in the Spanish Club, the Swing Choir and the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. Hudgins is the son of George and Cheryl Hudgins of Christiansburg.

BO PATRICK of Blacksburg High School is a three-year academic athlete. He has received many honors for writing and speaking, including the Group AA state championship in boys' poetry. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Forensics League. Patrick is the son of Dennis and Gene Patrick of Blacksburg.

JEREMY NICHOLS of Shawsville High School is a three-year varsity basketball player and a four-year member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is also a member of the Beta Club. Nichols is the son of Cheryl Nichols of Shawsville and Bruce Nichols of Irmo, S.C.

BETHANY EIGEL of Christiansburg High School is co-editor in chief of the yearbook, a member of the Key Club and the National Honor Society and president of the Beta Club. Eigel is the daughter of William and Tassy Eigel of Christiansburg.

Monica Shelor won first place in the talent competition of the Christiansburg High School FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA VARIETY SHOW for her performance of "A Natural Woman."

Kevin Jones won second place, singing his version of "I Swear."

A vocal quintet of Johnathan Couch, Travis Dickenson, Todd Jennings, Kevin Jones and Kevin Newcomb won third place.

Deanna duPlessis, Miss CHS 1993-94, presented the new Miss and Mr. CHS for 1995-96, Jessica Ratliff and Andra Beasley.

The Kaplan Education Center will hold a free SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE TEST SEMINAR Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at 374 Trexler Hall, Roanoke College. The seminar will provide information on test-taking strategy and how test scores are used in the college admission process. For more information or to reserve a seat, call Kaplan at 552-8378.

The Virginia Tech Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will sponsor five financial aid workshops for Virginia Tech students and families in the community applying for financial aid for the 1995-96 school year.

The workshops will offer step-by-step instructions for completing financial aid applications and a review of available financial aid.

The Virginia Parent-Teacher Association/Parent-Teacher-Student Association is accepting scholarship applications for high school seniors who will attend Virginia colleges and universities in the fall and are interested in working with children and youth.

The scholarships will be awarded based on both academic ability and financial need. Completed applications must be received at the state PTA office before March 1. For more information, call your school's guidance office or (804) 355-2816.

The Virginia Tech Department of Entomology will sponsor two one-credit GRADUATE COURSES for kindergarten through sixth-grade teachers in the upcoming semester.

The classes, Aquatic Entomology for Elementary Teachers and Hands-on Insect Activities for Elementary Education, will meet five Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning Jan. 19 and will include one Saturday field trip.

Montgomery County Schools Superintendent Herman Bartlett Jr. will speak to members of the PTA at MARGARET BEEKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Thursday at 7 p.m. in the school's multipurpose room. He will discuss his goals for the school system in the years to come and will be available for a question-and-answer session following the meeting. The meeting is open to the public.

The AUBURN HIGH SCHOOL SWING CHOIR will have a spaghetti supper Friday, 4-7 p.m., in the high school cafeteria. The meal is $5 for adults or $3.50 for children 12 and under. Youngsters under 4 may eat free. Proceeds from the supper will support activities of the school's choral department.
