Educational equity

BLACKSBURG - Following up on a survey suggesting rampant sexual harassment in schools, the Blacksburg branch of the American Association of University Women plans to examine the issue at the third annual Educational Equity Conference later this month at Virginia Tech.

The 1993 AAUW-commissioned study of sexual harassment in schools, "Hostile Hallways," surveyed more than 1,500 students in grades 8-11. More than 80 percent reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment in school, ranging from sexual comments, jokes, gestures and rumors to touching or grabbing in a sexual way; forced sexual acts and other unwanted sexual acts.

The Educational Equity Conference is set for Tuesday, Jan. 31, noon-4 p.m., at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center, Virginia Tech. Elyzabeth Holford, Virginia Tech's director of Equal Opportunity-Affirmative Action, is the keynote speaker. Her topic is "Are Sexual Harassment Policies Necessary?"

Conference participants may choose from among three workshops. Paula Wilder speaks on intervention strategies for teachers, Peg Sorrentino addresses sexual harassment and its impact on students and Rene Rios talks on developing a sexual harassment policy.

The conference is sponsored by the American Association of University Women, Appalachian Power Co., Hoechst Celanese, Volvo-GM, The Women's Center at Virginia Tech and the Women's Research Institute at Virginia Tech.

The $10 conference fee includes lunch. The registration deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 24. To register, call the conference registrar at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center, 231-5182.
