GOODLATTE IN SPOTLIGHT AS `CONTRACT' IS UNVEILED

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke, found himself at the center of action in the new Republican-controlled Congress Monday.

Goodlatte, who sits on the House subcommittee that handles constitutional amendments, was among the legislators speaking out on behalf of a proposed balanced budget amendment.

Goodlatte called the amendment ``the first test which will clearly show the American people if Congress has finally gotten the message so clearly sent last November to end the old federal spending spree.''

The second-term representative from the 6th District figures to be busier than most members of Congress in the coming weeks. Five of the 10 ``Contract With America'' bills will be moving through the House Judiciary Committee that he sits on; two of those five will go through the constitutional subcommittee - the balanced budget amendment and term limits legislation.

Goodlatte called it ``an honor'' to be a participant in ``the very first substantive hearing on the Contract.''
