INDOORS OR OUT, GAMES DON'T STOP FOR THE WINTER

With the New Year come a lot of opportunities. Hiking and hoops. Racing and wrestling. Swimming meets and volleyball spikes.

So without any further ado, here is what has happened, what is happening and what is going to happen.

WINTER WONDERLAND: Just because it is winter doesn't mean it is time to stay indoors. So, to provide you with a reason to go outside, the Blacksburg YMCA resumes its weekly hikes this month.

To counteract the cold, hikers should dress appropriately. They also should bring water and be willing to drive or help pay for gas.

All January hikes are on Sundays. They leave the YMCA parking lot, 403 Washington St. in Blacksburg, at 1:30 p.m. and are due to return by 5 p.m. The schedule for the month is :

Sunday - The Cascades, a hike along the improved Little Stoney Creek to the spectacular 60-foot waterfall. Call NORM EISS at 231-7192 (work) or 951-4015 (home) for more information.

Jan. 22 - Sinking Mountain Creek, a hike along the Appalachian Trail over open hills to the crest. Call DAVID JENKINS at 552-3747 for more information.

Jan. 29 - Brown Farm, a hike from the Roanoke Valley to the ridge of Paris Mountain. Call BARRY ANDERSON at 639-3953 for more information.

SWIMMING ALONG: While most people were getting ready for the holidays, 24 members of the Pulaski-based Southwest Aquatics Team were at the 33rd Annual Christmas Invitational at the University of Pittsburgh on Dec. 16-18.

Overall, SWAT finished 19th in the largest swimming meet in the country. The men's team finished 11th. The meet featured 1,300 swimmers from 106 teams.

The top SWAT performance came from the boys 10-and-under relay team of WILL BRUNNER, TOMMY EVANS, BOBBY NEWCOMB and GRANT THROCKMORTON. The team won the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay.

Several other swimmers had outstanding performances: GRAHAM GRAVLEY was sixth in the 1650 freestyle, seventh in the 100 freestyle and 11th in the 500 freestyle; WHIT HUGHSTON was 16th in the 1000 freestyle, 12th in the 100 backstroke, 10th in the 200 backstroke, 12th in the 200 individual medley and 14th in the 400 individual medley. MARK STONE was 16th in the 100 freestyle, 16th in the 100 breaststroke and 16th in the 200 individual medley. JACQUI MCLAUGHLIN was 16th in the 100 freestyle, 15th in the 100 backstroke and 16th in the 200 individual medley. And BETSY GARRATT was 14th in the 100 breaststroke.

Six other relay teams also placed. The girls 15-16 relay team finished 14th in the 200 medley and 13th in the 200 freestyle, while the girls senior team came in 15th in the 800 freestyle. The boys' relay teams were 14th in the 4009 freestyle, 15th in the 400 medley and ninth in the 800 freestyle.

HOOPIN' IT UP: The Travel Squad and Shelor's are both unbeaten through the first two games of the Blacksburg Men's B Basketball League. MARC WALLACE and JEROME PRESTON are among the reasons why. Wallace leads the league in scoring at 26.5 ppg and in three-pointers with seven. Preston is second in scoring at 26 ppg and leads in free throw percentage, hitting 85 percent from the foul line.

Also unbeaten is Federal Mogul, led by JIM BAHR, who is tied with RANDY HALL of Tech Bookstore for third in the league in scoring at 19.5 ppg.

Fifth and sixth in scoring are SCOTT REED of Travel Squad at 17 ppg and MIKE BURNOP of Shelor's at 15.5 ppg.

BASKETBALL CLINICS: Montgomery County Parks and Recreation has announced its pee-wee basketball clinic schedule.

Clinics run Saturdays until Feb. 11. At Shawsville High School, they will be at 8-9 a.m. At Christiansburg Middle School, at 9-10 a.m. And at Auburn High School in Riner, noon-1 p.m.

Parents are reminded to pick up their children at the conclusion of the clinic, because games will start immediately afterward. For more information, call TIM COONEY, athletic supervisor, at 382-6978.

SERVES AND SPIKES SCENE: Through mid-December, five teams had unbeaten and untied records in volleyball leagues in Blacksburg.

Three of them were in the Men's Power League, where Sting was in front (8-0), but only bye weeks kept Stump Jumpers (4-0) and Lethargic (4-0) from being tied for the lead. The Unknowns (4-0) were perfect in the Women's Power league, but only a tie blemished the record of Sharkey's (6-0-1). KA (4-0) of the Coed Power A League also had a perfect record.

Other league leaders were Slow Motion (7-1) in Women's B, Fertility (7-1) in Coed B Division 1. Christina's Team (6-2) and Enforcers (6-2) tied atop Coed B Division 2
