`TRIAD' PROGRAM AIMED AT CURBING CRIMES AGAINST SENIORS

Blacksburg seniors Jim and Lula Roberts of Blacksburg plan to attend the ceremonial signing in Richmond on Tuesday of an agreement to set up a TRIAD PROGRAM in Virginia. The American Association of Retired Persons program is aimed at protecting seniors from crime and rip-off artists through education, involvement and communications. A local triad includes the sheriff, police chiefs and leaders within the seniors community who would work together to reduce criminal victimization of the elderly. They would be backed up by an advisory council.

The statewide triad agreement - to be signed Tuesday morning at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond - will serve as an umbrella for local programs.

Virginia Attorney General Jim Gilmore, AARP State Director Robert Haas and representatives of the state associations of sheriffs and chiefs of police are scheduled to participate in the 11 a.m. signing ceremony. The event is part of Older Virginians Day at the General Assembly, sponsored by the Governor's Advisory Board on Aging and AARP. Jim Roberts is on the AARP's state legislative committee.

For more information, call Bob Blanton, 552-1919, or Charles Bittenbring, 534-2506.
