STATUE URGED FOR BLACK UNION SOLDIER

A historian says a statue of Powhatan Beaty would fit in nicely along Richmond's Monument Avenue, along with those of Robert E. Lee and other Civil War heroes.

Beaty was a native of Richmond who won the Medal of Honor while fighting in battles around Chaffin's Farm near the city.

But Beaty has some qualities that set him apart from Virginia's Confederate heroes.

``Here is a true hero of the Civil War, who also happens to be black,'' said historian Brian Pohanka. ``He also happens to have fought for the North.''
