Timothy Dale Layne, 31, entered the plea agreement Monday in Campbell County Circuit Court to avoid standing trial on murder charges.
Layne admitted he stabbed Roger Lee Mawyer, 25, in the chest during a drunken brawl July 24, but said Mawyer was beating him.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 14. Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Susan Walton said she would push for the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
