PRISON COMPANY LISTS SALARY RANGE

Corrections Corporation of America has compiled a list of positions and starting salaries at its proposed 1,500-bed prison in Wythe County.

Some opponents of the prison argue that the salaries would be low. Chuck Lacy, who telephoned CCA's prison in Clifton, Tenn., to ask about jobs, said that only guards' positions were available and their starting salaries were about $13,644 a year.

Jack Crosswell, a member of the Wythe County Board of Supervisors who favors the prison, said he was assured by Dana Moore, CCA's business development director, that the new Wythe jobs would not be minimum-wage jobs.

Moore has been attending public question-and-answer sessions on the prison throughout Wythe County this week. The most recent one was Wednesday night at George Wythe High School.

She has now provided a list of starting salaries for all positions that would be open at the prison. She said CCA does not have a maximum salary for its jobs.

The salary range given to Lacy is probably correct for Tennessee, she said, but not for Virginia because CCA must offer salaries in the same range as nearby state facilities like Bland Correctional Center.

``Yours has to be competitive with Bland or we're not going to get anyone to work,'' she said.

Salaries would range from $100,000 for a full-time doctor to $13,840 for some clerks and a receptionist

Projections call for hiring 188 guards with starting salaries of $17,175 and 23 senior correctional officers who would start at $20,564.

Twelve counselors would be hired, starting at $24,544, and 11 academic instructors, at $26,692.

Other jobs include 10 licensed practical nurses ($22,415), seven registered nurses ($29,361), nine food service workers ($16,500), six shift supervisors ($29,361), six vocational instructors ($26,692), six administrative clerks ($13,840), five assistant shift supervisors ($24,544), four unit managers ($29,361) and four maintenance workers ($19,435).

There would be two each of count clerks ($14,742); mail room clerks ($13,840); special education instructors and substance abuse counselors (both $26,692); records clerks, medical records clerks, secretaries, and warehouse/commissary workers (all $15,644).

The remaining single positions are: assistant maintenance supervisor ($22,415), bookkeeper ($20,564), business manager ($29,361), chaplain ($24,544), chief of security ($36,338), classification supervisor ($24,544), clerk/typist ($14,742), compliance coordinator ($22,415), computer lab technician ($22,415), dental assistant ($18,780), dentist ($80,000), educational counselor ($26,692), food service manager ($26,692), food service supervisor ($20,564), instruction supervisor ($29,361), jobs coordinator ($20,564), librarian ($24,544), library aide ($17,175), mail room supervisor ($17,175), maintenance supervisor ($29,230), maintenance worker ($19,435), medical services supervisor ($36,338), personnel coordinator ($20,564), physician ($100,000), principal ($36,338), psychologist ($32,591), receptionist ($13,840), records supervisor ($17,175), recreation supervisor ($24,544), safety manager ($22,415), training manager ($26,692), and warehouse/commissary supervisor ($20,564).
