KIRK L. HOSP, son of Mary J. Hosp of Roanoke, has been promoted to Army chief warrant officer 4.

He is a 1977 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

CHIEF PETTY OFFICER DAVID A. KELLY, son of David P. and Mildred W. Kelly of Roanoke, recently received the Navy Commendation Medal.

He was honored for meritorious service while serving as an administrative chief with Flett Training Group, Detachment Norfolk, Little Creek, where he is currently assigned.

Kelly is a 1979 graduate of Roanoke Catholic High School.

PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS DAVID I. HUNTER, a 1979 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, recently completed operations off the coast of Haiti aboard the USS America.

PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS MICHAEL A. MILLER, son of Johnny R. and Ruth A. Miller of Roanoke, recently completed operations off the coast of Haiti aboard the USS America.

He is a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

NAVY LT. MARK F. EDDY, son of Lee B. and Nancy R. Eddy of Roanoke, recently returned from operations off the coast of Haiti aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

He is a 1977 graduate of Cave Spring High School and a 1981 graduate of Virginia Tech.

ROANOKE-AREA residents aboard the USS George Washington, which has been sent back to the Persian Gulf, include:

Airman Timothy J. Sherman, son of Sarah L. Sink of Roanoke; Chief Petty Officer James W. Clendenen, son of James W. Clendenen Sr. of Roanoke; Petty Officer 2nd Class Kyle D. Franklin of Roanoke; Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian W. Hall, son of Ben A. and Sandra W. Hall of Roanoke; Airman Apprentice Brian D. Mann, son of Laurel M. Williams of Roanoke; and Airman Timothy J. Sherman, son of Gary L. Sherman of Vinton.

SEAMAN RECRUIT MICHAEL P. GRIMM, son of Michael N. and Janet W. Grimm of Roanoke, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

He is a 1994 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

SEAMAN WELLYN C. SELLERS, son of Myra W. Sellers of Roanoke, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

He is a 1984 graduate of Cave Spring High School and a 1989 graduate of Ferrum College, Ferrum.

PVT. LAURA S. HAWLEY, daughter of Lawrence S. and Phyllis J. Breeding of Roanoke, recently graduated from U.S. Army Basic Training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Hawley is a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School. She is now stationed at Fort Lee at Petersburg for extended training.

AIRMAN 1ST CLASS PAUL J. MCEACHERN, son of Bill C. and Grace M. McEachern of Roanoke, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

He is a 1994 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

NAVY SEAMAN DAVID A. BARNES of Roanoke recently returned to San Diego from a six-month deployment to the Indian and Western Pacific oceans and the Persian Gulf.

Barnes, who worked with the ship USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group, took part in operations off the coast of Somalia, Rwanda and the Persian Gulf.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS GARY W. CAMPBELL has completed a month deployment to the Persian Gulf aboard the USS John L. Hall. He is a 1988 graduate of Patrick Henry High School

THE USS GEORGE WASHINGTON JOINT TASK GROUP recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas and the Persian Gulf.

Roanokers participating in the deployment were: Navy Airman Apprentice Brian D. Mann, son of Laurel Williams of Roanoke; Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian W. Hall, son of Ben and Sandra Hall of Roanoke; Navy Chief Petty Officer James W. Clendenen, son of James W. Clendenen Sr. of Roanoke; and Navy Airman Timothy J. Sherman, son of Sarah L. Sink of Roanoke and Gary Sherman of Vinton.

Crew members performed duty off the coast of Bosnia and enforced the "no-fly zone" over southern Iraq.

MARINE PVT. MATTHEW A. COTY, son of Joseph and Leslie Coty of Roanoke, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

PFC. DAVID J. BOLT, son of John W. and Joann L. Bolt of 2341 Brookfield Drive, Roanoke, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

He is a 1994 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

THE VIRGINIA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD has awarded the Army Achievement Medal to a Roanoke resident and announced the promotions of three others.

Sgt. First Class Theodore Yates received the medal for outstanding performance and service; and Kevin M. Campbell, Stephen L. Lee and Russell Lowry were promoted to the rank of sergeant.

THE FOOD SERVICE SECTION of the Virginia National Guard's Headquarters Company, First Battalion, 116th Infantry has received the Philip A. Connelly Award for excellence in food preparation.

Sgt. First Class Larry Woods led crew that includes Sgts. Dennis Ayers, Gregory Mason, James Patterson and Jimmy Phillips, Specialist Michael Embry, Privates First Class Johnny Browing and Mark Saunders, and Private Peter Fenerty.

The team received a gold trophy, and individuals received silver medallions in the annual competition by food service units throughout the Army.
