Roanoker elected to state Masonry position

Albert H. Tignor Jr. of Roanoke has been elected grand junior deacon of the Grand Lodge of Virginia.

Tignor will serve as Grand Master of Masons in Virginia in 1999-2000.

Tignor, retired from the C&P telephone company, also has been with the Kazim Temple, and was elected its potentate in 1986.

MDA car show accepting entries

The Roanoke Valley Charity Car Show Committee Inc. is accepting entries for the 15th annual MDA Car Show to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The show will be held at the Roanoke Civic Center.

A variety of vehicles can be entered, including: custom cars, street rods, race cars, antiques and classics, prostreets, motorcycles, pickups, muscle cars, four-wheel drives, off-road vehicles and vans.

There is no fee to enter. Call the MDA office at 772-3237 for an application.

Festival of Trees winners announced

Blue Ridge Community Services has announced the winners of the 12th annual Festival of Trees.

The winners are: Salvation Army/Turning Point, people's choice award for charitable organizations; Veterans Administration Medical Center, people's choice award for noncharitable organizations; Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council, children's choice award for charitable organizations; Bell Atlantic/Telephone Pioneers of America, noncharitable organizations; and the Kroger Co., Spirit of the Season award.

Ex-Roanoker releases second novel

Dorothy Howell, formerly of Roanoke, has released her second novel, "Anna's Treasure," from Berkley Publishing. It is a historical romance novel set in North Carolina during the 1880s.

Another novel, tentatively titled "Tea Time," is scheduled for release in September.

Howell, formerly Dorothy Dowdy and graduate of William Fleming High School, is married to David Howell, also of Roanoke. They reside in Highland, Calif. with their daughters, Judith, a college student, and Stacy, a sixth-grader.

"Anna's Treasure" is available in book stores.
