CRAIG SUPERVISORS RETAIN OFFICERS

The Craig County Board of Supervisors decided Jan. 3 to stay with its current leadership for 1995.

Without opposition, the board re-elected all of its officers and retained its same meeting times.

Zane M. Jones will continue as chairman of the board and John M. Lee will continue as vice chairman. The board also will continue meeting on the first Monday of each month at 3:30 p.m. and on the third Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Jones, who has been chairman for about three decades, said 1995 "may be the toughest year budget-wise we've ever had."

He said the Allen administration's proposal to cut the state budget will shift more expenses to localities while at the same time taking away the localities' power to levy taxes.

Craig County also has been pinched financially from another standpoint - the federal government.

Almost three-fourths of its land is within the boundary of the Jefferson National Forest and is not subject to real estate taxes. But, in such situations, the federal government pays localities to ease that loss of tax revenue. The amount, however, has been decreasing over the years, and Craig officials have said the federal government has indicated that the payment eventually will be reduced to zero.
