GLENVAR NIPS BATH COUNTY

Glenvar blew a 10-point lead late in its showdown with Bath County but held on to snap the Chargers' five-game winning streak 52-51 on Friday night in a Pioneer District boys' game.

Bath County (7-3 overall, 2-1 Pioneer) trailed 48-38 with 4 minutes, 23 seconds remaining. Jon Rodgers, who scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, hit a 3-pointer to to start the Chargers' comeback. Kris Phillips then hit two free throws and a 3-pointer around a couple of Glenvar misses to pull Bath County to 48-46.

Jason Darnall then hit a shot to give the Highlanders (7-2, 2-0) a four-point lead. Rodgers hit two free throws, and after Glenvar missed a free throw, Rodgers hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 52-51 with 1:16 left.

After both teams missed shots, the Chargers misfired three times underneath the basket with nine seconds left and Glenvar prevailed despite missing a free throw in the last few seconds. Todd Townsend's 3-pointer at the buzzer for Bath County just missed.

Corey Willis and Darnall each scored 16 points for the Highlanders.

The Chargers, who shot 29 percent for the game, played without their leading scorer, Patrick Lennon, who quit the team for personal reasons.

MONETA - Hunter Hoggatt welcomed his former teammates into his new home, then burned the Colonels in a Seminole District game.

Hoggatt, who transferred from Altavista before this school year, racked up a game-high 18 points as the Golden Eagles (7-4, 7-4) rolled. Cornelius Fox also scored 18 points for Staunton River, including two 3-pointers.

Fox scored 10 of his points in a 27-point Golden Eagles fourth quarter. Staunton River shot 16-for-17 from the free-throw line in the fourth to ice the game and was 24-of-27 overall.

Lee Sherlan led Altavista (7-3, 7-3) with 14 points, and Dennis Brown added 13.

DALEVILLE - Kevin Garst had 27 points - 14 in the fourth quarter - to lead the Spartans past the Cavaliers in a Blue Ridge District game.

Salem (5-4, 1-1) also got 15 points from Matt Woolwine and 10 from Ryan Reeves.

Lord Botetourt (7-3, 0-1) had a five-point lead at halftime but unraveled in the third quarter by trying to run with the Spartans. Salem took advantage of the lapse by scoring transition baskets and dominating inside, winning the third quarter 25-12.

Shannon Williams led the Cavaliers with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

Garst took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 of the Spartans' 21 points including eight consecutive free throws down the stretch. Garst also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Lord Botetourt cut its deficit to five points on a couple of occasions in the fourth quarter, but poor shot selection enabled Salem to remain in front.

It was two against one as the Celtics upset the Raiders in overtime in a Virginia Independent Conference game at North Cross.

Tony Joyce and Rod Tasco combined for 46 points to propel Roanoke Catholic (2-9, 1-3). However, it was a 3-point shot by Chris Roberts that tied the score at 70 and forced overtime after the Raiders (5-5, 3-2) missed a last attempt to win in regulation.

Hal Johnson pumped in a career-high 44 points for the Raiders and also grabbed 14 rebounds.

LEXINGTON - Every Terrier scored as William Byrd routed the Wildcats in Blue Ridge District action.

Rockbridge County couldn't stop the Terriers' Chris Childress, who scorched the Wildcats (0-10, 0-2) for 21 points and nine rebounds. Mayo Wilson also contributed for William Byrd (8-1, 1-0), draining three 3-pointers.

Rob Hoyle led the way for Rockbridge, scoring a team-high 11 points in the loss.

NEW CASTLE - The Rockets outscored the Shawnees 24-3 in the second period en route to a 20-point victory over the Shawnees in non-district action.

Robby Huffman led Craig County's charge in the second period with 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and Jamie Fisher contributed nine in the quarter.

Fisher led the Rockets (3-4) with a game-high 20 points and Huffman finished with 19 points.

Tony Walker led Shawsville (1-9) with 13 points.

BEDFORD - The Minutemen (10-1, 10-1) played stingy defense and avenged their only loss of the season, beating the Bees (9-3, 9-3) in a Seminole District game.

Kris Ridgeway had 16 points and Stephen Shrader added 15 for Liberty.. The Minutemen led 35-16 at halftime and never were threatened.

The Patriots had no answer for Aimee Beightol and the Knights.

Beightol scored a season-high 26 points as Cave Spring (8-3, 4-1) blew out visiting PH (0-11, 0-6) in the Roanoke Valley District.

The Patriots hung tough for 71/2 minutes, trailing 13-9 against a much taller Cave Spring team. Knights coach Linda Long called for a full-court press with about 21/2 minutes left in the first quarter, enabling Cave Spring to go on a 10-2 run that ended with Beightol's 3-pointer - one of her six - at the buzzer. PH never would get any closer.

Six-foot forward Jackie Banks led Cave Spring in the second period, scoring seven of her 21 points. Cheryl Rhodes also added 12 points for the Knights.

In the third period, Beightol went on a tear, scoring 11 points. She connected on three 3-pointers and another field goal, boosting the Cave Spring lead to 54 points at the end of the third.

Artrice Webb led the Patriots with 10 points.

William Fleming (6-3, 0-3) was led by Felicia Manns, who scored a game-high 20 points - 14 in the second half.
