ICECAPS SMOTHER EXPRESS

Brad Mullahy turned aside 33 shots and the Raleigh IceCaps jumped out to a 5-0 lead as they defeated the Roanoke Express 7-1 in an East Coast Hockey League game at Dorton Arena Friday night.

The IceCaps broke through Roanoke's league-leading road penalty killing unit for three power play goals and held the Express (19-10-6) winless for the fifth consecutive game.

Raleigh capitalized on an early first period power play barrage as referee Dave Brown called penalties on the Express' Rouslan Toujikov and Stephane Desjardins 56 seconds apart.

While on a 5-on-3, ECHL All-Star center Kevin Riehl jammed home a fourth rebound past Express goalie Dan Ryder after Trevor Jobe had been denied on a backhanded wraparound. Ryder proceeded to stop crease edge rebounds by Wade Bartley and Doug Sinclar, but Riehl extended his body and poked the puck over the line for his 22nd goal with 6 minutes, 44 seconds left in the first.

Just 29 seconds later, newcomer Marquis Mathieu, acquired in a recent trade with the Toledo Storm, rifled home a drive over Ryder's left shoulder as the IceCaps screened the Express goalie from Mathieu's line of sight.

The IceCaps, who had won only three games at home, scored three more goals in the second period.

Jamie Erb beat Ryder over the left glove on a Justin Tomberlin feed for a 3-0 lead.

Less than six minutes later, Trevor Jobe, the ECHL's second all-time leading scorer recently acquired in a trade with Nashville, ripped a 25-foot shot to Ryder's left for his first goal as an IceCap for a 4-0 lead. Doug SInclair padded the lead on a tap-in from a Jobe 2-on-1 feed at 16:43.

Roanoke's goal came at 18:19 of the second when Oleg Yashin tapped in for his 19th of the season.

Raleigh rounded out the scoring on an early third period power play deflection by Jim Duhart off a Lyle Wildgoose center point drive and a clean walk in by All Star defender Derek Linnell.

The IceCaps (13-19-5) are still buried in last place in the ECHL East by eight points.

ICECHIPS: The Express faces Hampton Roads at the Roanoke Civic Center tonight at 7:30. The Admirals' eight-game winning streak was snapped by Charlotte at the Norfolk Scope Friday night, 4-3 ...
