CABLEACE AWARDS PRESENTED ON TNT

Programs, performances and the artists who delivered them will be honored at the 16th Annual CableACE Awards show tonight on TNT.

Awards will be made live from the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles for 15 major categories. Presentations for the remainder of the 86 classes were to be made Friday in a non-televised ceremony at the Century Plaza Hotel.

This year's nominations recognize 391 programs, performances and creative artists from 28 cable networks. There were a record 2,210 entries from 52 national cable networks.

Home Box Office led the networks with 99 nominations, followed by Arts & Entertainment (32), TNT (28) and Showtime (27).

HBO's ``Dream On'' had 12 nominations, followed by TBS's ``National Geographic Explorer'' (10) and HBO's ``And The Band Played On'' (10), HBO's ``The Larry Sanders Show'' (9), HBO's ``Tales From the Crypt'' (9), Disney's ``Avonlea'' (6) and HBO's ``Barbra Streisand: The Concert'' (6).

The major presentation of the evening, the Golden CableACE Award honoring a cable company, project or program, will go to C-SPAN School Bus, a 45-foot, mobile, television-production studio and traveling classroom designed to give visitors a hands-on experience.

John C. Malone, president and CEO of Tele-Communications Inc., will receive the Governors Award for his achievements in developing cable programming. The Learning Channel received the Creators Award for enriching the landscape of cable television.

Presenters range from Lauren Bacall and Walter Cronkite to Academy and Emmy Award-winners Marlee Matlin, Kathy Baker, Dana Delany, Swoosie Kurtz, Dennis Miller and Tracey Ullman, as well as previous CableACE winners nominated again this year, Larry King, Rip Torn and Bill Maher, who also hosts.

Cirque Du Soleil, the renowned troupe that made its television debut on HBO, will be featured throughout the two-hour show, which will be repeated the same night.

Tonight on The Family Channel: The premiere of ``Young Indiana Jones and the Treasure of the Peacock's Eye.'' Sean Patrick Flanery stars in the film, which was produced by Lucasfilm Ltd., Paramount Television Group and The Family Channel. Encores Monday and Saturday night; Jan. 27 and 28.

Tonight on The Disney Channel: ``Roger Daltrey: The Music of the Who,'' a celebration of rock 'n' roll from Carnegie Hall with many Pete Townshend songs, backed by the Juilliard Orchestra. Repeats the same night, Friday night and Jan. 26 and 27.

Monday night on TBS: ``The Thorn Birds.'' The 1983 hit mini-series returns with Rachel Ward, Barbara Stanwyck and Richard Chamberlain. Part 1 runs for three hours Monday night; Parts 2 and 3 - a total of four hours - run Tuesday night, and Part 4, three hours, Wednesday night.

Monday night on Arts & Entertainment: ``Biography Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: A Historical Perspective.'' This is the premiere of an A&E original documentary chronicling the civil-rights leader's struggle for freedom for the poor and the oppressed. Repeats the same night.

Tuesday night on Arts & Entertainment: ``To Be A Somebody.'' This is the North American television premiere of the season's first ``Cracker'' mystery, with Robbie Coltrane back as the criminal psychologist. Repeats the same night.

Saturday night on TBS: ``Elvis on Ice,'' with world champion skaters Elvis Stojko, Philippe Candeloro, Surya Bonaly and Robin Cousins. Encores Jan. 23.

Later that night TBS airs the ``52nd Annual Golden Globe Awards'' live from Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Saturday night on Sci-Fi Channel: The premiere of ``Trapped in Space,'' starring Jack Wagner, Jack Coleman and Kay Lenz. The trio must decide who will live and who will die when their space ship is hit by a meteor and their oxygen supply is limited. Repeats the same night and on Jan 22 and 28.
