The 20,000-acre lake, and other impoundments, has seen a reduction in warden patrols, the result of shortfalls in the budget of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Gov. George Allen's proposed budget offers no new funds for the department.
Only 129 of a scheduled 181 patrols were conducted on Smith Mountain Lake during the busy part of the boating season last year, the lake advisory board said.
