IN SERVICE

Air Force Airman REBECCA L. HORNE, daughter of Patricia Horne of Dublin, has completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Horne completed technical training in Phase I of the Signals Intelligence Specialist Field at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., and is stationed at Corry Station, Pensacola, Fla.

Air Force Airman CHAD E. WILLIAMS, son of Marshall L. Williams and Lillian R. Evans and stepson of Robert Evans of Pembroke, has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Army Sgt. FRANK W. BRANCH, son of Bobby G. Branch and Roxanne M. Traylor of Pulaski, has been awarded the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Army's highest noncombat proficiency award. Branch is stationed at Smith Barracks, Baumholder, Germany.

Navy Airman MICHAEL T. DOWNING, son of Richard and Linda C. Hamilton of Elliston, is midway through a six-month deployment in the Western Pacific and Indian oceans with Strike Fighter Squadron 97, as part of the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk Battle Group.

Navy Seaman LOUIS J. VALENCIA, son of Delores A. Scott of Hiwassee, has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla.

Air Force Airman KELLIE J. McCOY, daughter of Russell K. and Joan G. McCoy of Dublin, has been promoted to her present rank in the security police force at Pope Air Force Base, Fayetteville, N.C.

Army Pfc. AARON L. CRESS, son of Stephen M. and Vanpen Cress of Pulaski, has been awarded the Army Achievement Medal, which is given for meritorious service, acts of courage or other outstanding accomplishments. This is his third award.

ROTC Cadet DEANNA L. PHILLIPS, daughter of Johnnie D. and Diane N. Phillips of Christiansburg, has received practical work in military leadership at the ROTC advanced camp, Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C. Successful completion of the camp and graduation from college result in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Guard or Reserve. Phillips is a student at Radford University.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class JEREMY A. SMITH, son of Sharon H. and James W. Smith Sr. of Pulaski, has received a letter of commendation for superior performance of duty while at Naval Reserve Center, Wilmington, N.C.

Navy Seaman Recruit JESSE L. MIKOS, son of Debrah A. Oliver of Radford, has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Marine Staff Sgt. BILLY J. HOGANS, son of Mary Rollins of Pulaski, has received a letter of appreciation for superior performance of duty while with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, Santa Ana, Calif.

Navy Lt. DONALD T. ALLERTON, former resident of Radford, has returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean with the amphibious assault ship USS Guam, the lead ship of the USS Guam Amphibious Ready Group.

Marine Pvt. ORMOND B. HONAKER, son of Troy and Mary D. Honaker of Dublin, has completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. JOHN E. JOSEPH, former resident of Radford, has left on a five-month deployment to Antarctica with U.S. Naval Support Force Antarctica. While at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, he will help with research by the U.S. Antarctic Program.

Navy Seaman Recruit STEPHEN E. UMBERGER, son of James E. and Jane S. Umberger of Pulaski, has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Navy Seaman Recruit WESTLY A. HILL, son of Rupert Hill and Farris E. Pauley, both of Austinville, has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Army Sgt. WILLIAM L. GARDNER II, son of Thomas C. and Delores R. Gardner of Blacksburg, has been assigned to U.S. Army Recruiting Station, Daytona Beach, Fla.

Marine 1st Lt. KEITH B. FRANTZ, son of Nevin R. Frantz and Sally J. Frantz of Blacksburg, has returned from duty in Haiti with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Caribbean. Frantz was aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp.

Marine Cpl. TIMOTHY E. RATLIFF, son of Thomas G. and Carolyn Ratliff of Elliston, has returned from duty in Haiti with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Caribbean. He was aboard the USS Wasp.

Navy Seaman Recruit LARRY L. DOSS, son of Grace K. and Larry L. Doss Sr. of Christiansburg, has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla.

Army Pvt. CHARLES D. DUNCAN JR., son of Linda G. Bailey and stepson of Herbert F. Bailey of Shawsville, has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Army Pvt. SHANNON N. EMERY, son of Lynda Nelsen and stepson of Kenny Nelsen of Christiansburg, has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Air Force Airman CYNTHIA D. MOORE, daughter of Brenda M. Cox of Dublin and Charles E. Moore of Lynchburg, has arrived for duty at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, Okla. Moore is an information management specialist.

Air Force Staff Sgt. EARL D. GALLAHUGH, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gallahugh of Dublin, has arrived for duty at Kunsan Air Base, Kunsan City, South Korea. Gallahugh is an aircraft maintenance specialist.

U.S. Navy Recruit MICKI J. FAUL, daughter of Alice Thompson of Christiansburg and Charles Faul of New York, has been guaranteed training in the Navy's Cryptologic Program at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. Upon successful completion of recruit training, Faul will be trained as a Navy cryptologic technician. These technicians control the flow of classified messages and information.
