SCHOOLS NAME REFLECTIONS WINNERS

Schools in the New River Valley that are taking part in the National Parent-Teacher Association's Reflections program have announced their school-level winners for the 1994-95 school year.

Reflections is a nationwide cultural arts program that encourages creative expression in primary, elementary, middle and high school students. Students may enter in four categories: literature, music, photography, and visual arts. All entries must be original works created entirely by the students.

At each school, one entry in each category from each of the four age levels will be evaluated at the county level. County winners may compete at the district, region and state levels.

Twelve members of the Christiansburg High School band have been selected to compete in All-District Band on Feb. 3 and 4 at Salem High School: LAURA EVANS, LAURA DANGERFIELD and LISA HEASTER, flute; DAWN ESPLEY, clarinet; GARRETT BONNEMA, bass clarinet; ELAINE MELDRUM, horn; JENNY LAMBERT, string bass; JOSH BRADLEY, bassoon; and STEVEN HESS, trumpet.

BRANDON MILLER, bassoon; MATTHEW LUCAS, alto sax; and RYAN SCHUTT, trumpet, also will audition for Virginia All-State Band.

Christiansburg High School belongs to a district that includes Montgomery County, Roanoke, Lynchburg, South Boston and Henry County.

The Radford City Parent Resource Center will sponsor "POSITIVE DISCIPLINE,"a workshop for parents, Thursday, 6:30 p.m. in the Belle Heth Elementary School library.

Judith Davis, a psychologist for Radford City Schools, will discuss common problem situations and offer techniques to deal with them.

The Kipps Elementary Parent Teacher Association will sponsor LOCAL GOVERNMENT NIGHT Thursday at 7 in the school cafeteria. Wat Hopkins will discuss the transition to elected school boards. The public is welcome.

The Blacksburg New School will hold its annual PASTA SUPPER Sunday, 4-7 p.m., at South Main Cafe. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 5-11, and free for children under 5.

Financial aid and scholarships

The Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and Crestar Bank are offering a FINANCIAL AID HOT LINE through Jan. 26 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, 7-10.

Financial aid administrators from public and private colleges and universities will answer questions from students and families on financial aid forms, scholarships, grants, and work study and loan programs.

The hot line number is (800) 552-3006.

Floyd County High School will hold a financial aid workshop Thursday, 7 p.m. Joe Sheffey of New River Community College will be available for individual meetings before the workshop. To set up an appointment, call the guidance department at 745-9456.

The Virginia Tech Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will sponsor five FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS for Virginia Tech students and families applying for financial aid for the 1995-96 school year.

The workshops will offer step-by-step instructions for completing applications and a review of available aid.

The Virginia Parent-Teacher Association/Parent-Teacher-Student Association is accepting SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS for seniors who will attend Virginia colleges and universities in the fall and are interested in working with children and youth.

The scholarship awards will be based on academic ability and financial need. Completed applications must be received at the state PTA office before March 1.
