DOLLAR TREE STORES' PUBLIC STOCK COSTLIER THAN ITS MERCHANDISE

Dollar Tree Stores Inc. plans a public stock offering, but investors will have to pay more than the company name implies to buy a share.

The Norfolk-based Dollar Tree, a retail chain that operates 409 stores in 20 states, gets its name by stocking its shelves with items that sell for $1 or less. But the calculated offering price for the 2.5 million shares that have been proposed for public offering was $16 a share.

If that price becomes the actual offering, the stock sale would bring in $40 million. The proposal, submitted for approval Friday to the Securities and Exchange Commission, would place 15.1 percent of the company in public hands.
