ROANOKE REGIONAL ECONOMIC INDICATORS
After a run of several good months, the number of building permits issued
in the Roanoke Valley dropped in December. Roanoke, Salem and Roanoke County
together issued 288 permits for construction valued at $5,278,770 last month.
Building officials said no major projects were planned. A year ago, the three
governments issued 271 permits worth more than $12 million. That value was
driven primarily by expansion by The Kroger Co.'s facilities. November figures
were 407 projects worth nearly $24.5 million, including an addition to the
Roanoke City Jail and the new Salem baseball park.
