EX-TEACHER DIES AFTER STROKE IN CAR

A retired schoolteacher died Tuesday in Rocky Mount after suffering a stroke while on her way to pay her water bill.

Bessie Wray, 71, was driving on Donaldson Avenue at 10:55 a.m. when her car crossed both lanes of traffic, drove onto the sidewalk and struck a utility pole in front of the Municipal Building, Police Chief Richard Jenkins said.

Jenkins said Wray, who lived on Meadowview Avenue in Rocky Mount, was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she died from the stroke.
