The Plano, Texas, maker of snack foods said it expects low- and no-fat snacks to represent a third of its business by 1998, with an estimated $2 billion in retail sales.
The company said the move to expand is directly linked to increased snacking among consumers. Recent studies show that snacks virtually have become a fourth meal for Americans, Frito-Lay said.
Based on calories, people consume nearly 25 percent of their total calories from snacks, the company said. Last year, Americans consumed more than 87 pounds of snacks, more than 20 pounds of them salty snacks, Frito-Lay said.
