The 1994 production was a 9 percent increase over the 945 million tons produced in 1993, when a seven-month United Mine Workers strike curtailed production in seven states.
The previous production record was 1.029 billion tons in 1990, according to the U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration.
The increase was due primarily to a demand for steam coal at electric utilities to replace stockpiles that were depleted during the coal strike, said National Coal Association spokesman John Grasser in Washington, D.C.
