THE PEOPLE COLUMN

Living Colour has broken up after 10 years. The musicians went into a British studio to record late last year, only to discover the magic was gone.

The band opened for the Rolling Stones' ``Steel Wheels'' tour in 1989, and a year later headlined the first ``Lollapalooza'' tour. The band's debut album, ``Vivid,'' went multiplatinum in 1988 and contained the single ``Cult of Personality.''

Said guitarist Vernon Reid: ``I'm saddened by it but ... Living Colour's sense of unity and purpose was getting weaker and fuzzier. ... It was better to break up before we became one of those bands where no one speaks to each other.''
