ADKINS, Benjamin Hughes, 80, of Salem, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995. Mr. Adkins was born and raised in Danville. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1936. He worked for Westinghouse Electric Corp. for 42 years. He was also a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Garrett Adkins; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Bob Hill, Richmond; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Leo McMahon, Salem; son and daughter-in-law, Ben H. Jr. and Trisha Adkins; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lou and Bo Hagen, Salem; fourteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers, Berkley G. Adkins, Danville, J. Reginald Adkins, Abilene , Kan.; sisters, Doris Pritchard, Farmville, Dorothy Young, Richmond. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, January 20, 1995 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem with Dr. Gregory L. Adkins of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church officiating. BASHAM, Kenneth Allen, 34, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 14, 1995. Funeral services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Chapel. The Rev. BERRY, Elizabeth Ann (Betty), 66, of Abington, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995, at her home. She was a former resident of Chilhowie and a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church, Chilhowie. She was preceded in death by her parents, David E. and Frieda Helen Erickson Sneller Sr.; and a sister, Florence S. Mills. She is survived by her husband, Byrum Ray Berry; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael R. and Joan Berry, Bristol, Tenn., David W. and Joyce Berry, Pigeon Forge, Tenn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Phil Cobble, Knoxville, Tenn.; one brother, David E. CARSON, Julia, 88, of Roanoke, formerly of Ashland, Va., died January 11, 1995. She was born at Pop Castle in White Stone, Va., and graduated from the college of William & Mary. Following graduation she completed a course in dietetics at St. Lukes Hospital, New York, N.Y. She was home demonstration agent for the Hanover County Extension Service and received numerous merit awards. Mrs. Carson was a member of Ashland Presbyterian Church. COVINGTON, Mary Willie, 63, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, January 16, 1995. DAVIS, Nancy Holiday, 52, of Pearisburg, passed away Monday, January 16, 1995, in the Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born September 14, 1942, and was employed by the Holiday Motor Lodge in Pearisburg. Surviving are her mother, Roxie P. Cox, Pulaski; two sons and daughters-in-law, Sgt. Jasper and Diane Davis, Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C., Sgt. Darnell and Patti Davis, Fort Campbell, Ky.; one grandson, Jasper Davis III (J.D.); two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Micky Holiday, Charlottesville, Curtis and Judy Cox, Pulaski; her special friends, Aubrey, Sue and Connie Dodson, Pearisburg. Appreciation is extended to Dr. Randolph and Staff at Lewis Gale Hospital for all of their consideration and guidance throughout Nancy's illness. DYAL, Sally Irma Sorrells, 46, of Manteo, N.C., formerly of Lexington, died Monday, January 16, 1995, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk. Born in Lexington June 21, 1948, she was the daughter of John Henry Sorrells and Mary Lauderdale Sorrells of Lexington. Mrs. Dyal was a member of Lauderdale A.R.P. Church, and was an English and French teacher at Manteo High Schoo l where she served as a faculty advisor to the yearbook staff. While in college, Mrs. Dyal performed as a singer in the summer production of The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island, N.C. In addition to her parents, survivors include her husband, David Earl Dyal, Manteo, N.C.; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Dyal and Mollie Rebecca Maitland Dyal both of Manteo, N.C.; one sister, Mary Ellen Sorrells Higgins, Richmond; two brothers, John Henry Sorrells Jr., Alexandria, David Jefferson Sorrells, Raleigh, N.C.; two nieces and one nephew. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, January 20, from Lauderdale A.R.P. Church with the Rev. W.C. Lauderdale and the Rev. Zeb Carson Williams officiating. A World War II Army veteran, he served in the European Theatre of Operations. He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Hamersly Gillispie; a brother, Oval B. Gillispie. GUTHRIE, Lee Jackson, 78, of Salem, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995. He was a lifelong Salem resident and he retired after 40 years of service as a superintendent of Valleydale Packing. He was a member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church and was a Navy World War II veteran. Survivors include his wife, Lillian Smith Guthrie; a son, Gary Lee Guthrie; a grandson, Paige Lee Guthrie, all of Salem; a brother, James L. Guthrie, Georgia; an aunt, Carrie Elliott, Salem. HERRENKOHL, Anna Marie Ashworth, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995. She was the widow of Roy C. Herrenkohl and the daughter of the late L. J. Ashworth and Florence Goode Ashworth. Mrs. Herrenkohl was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Roy C. Herrenkohl, Bethlehem, Pa., Karl J. Herrenkohl, Pittsford, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Lewis Ashworth, Marion, Ohio. HODGES, Dennis Sims, 42, of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, formerly of Hurt, died Monday, January 16, 1995 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Born May 13, 1952 in Altavista, he was the son of Jack Hodges and Pattie Shelton Hodges. Mr. Hodges was predeceased by a daughter, Casey Elizabeth Hodges. He was a graduate of VPI and received his Masters Degree from Radford University. He was a salesman for the AKZO Chemical Co. In additon to his parents of Hurt, he is survived by one daughter, Brooke Hodges, Morganton, N.C.; four brothers, Jackie Hodges, Key West, Fla., Stanley Hodges, Wytheville, Carey Hodges and Joe Hodges, both of Hickory, N. C.; and one sister, Nancy Lambert, Hartsville, S.C. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 1995 at the Greenfield Baptist Church by the Rev. R. G. Rowland. HUANG, Rosa Qi, 31, of Blacksburg, died Monday, January 9, 1995. Mrs. Huang was born in China on September 2, 1963. Mrs. Huang was an Associate Professor in the Mathematic Department at Virginia Tech. She is survived by her husband, David Yang Gao; one daughter, Tonya Ting Gao; one son, Timothy Kun Gao, both of the home; mother, Huei Feng Luo, Somerville, Mass.; father, Yang Qian Huang, Somerville, Mass.; three brothers, Jian Ping Huagn, Beijing, China, Charles Yun Shui Huang, Somerville, Mass., Xiao Jie Huang, Tokyo, Japan. HUGHES, Brent Robert, 23, of Plantation Rd., Roanoke, died Monday, January 16, 1995, at his home after a valiant battle with cancer. Mr. Hughes was a 1989 graduat e of Northside High School. He was medically retired from the U.S. Navy Seabees having served during Desert Storm. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bruce and Sue Reid, Rocky Mount. Surviving are his mother, Suzanne Reid Hughes, Roanoke; aunts and uncles, Eleanor and Charles Easter, Smith Mountain Lake, Beverly and Donald Sowder, Fairfax; a long-time devoted friend of the family, Cecil Hardy, Roanoke. QUILLEN, Allene H., 71, of Marion, died Monday, January 16, 1995, in Fredericksburg, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Grover Howard Quillen. She was a member of Marion Gospel Chapel, and a member of the Woodmen of the World. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Grover Howard ``Sonny"" Quillen and Charlotte Perkins Quillen, both of Fredericksburg; and five grandchildren. REED, Howard Watha, 77, of Glyn Lyn, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 1995, in a Pearisburg, Va. hospital. He was born in Monroe County, W.Va. on December 2, 1917 and was the son of the late Henry and Nettie Reed. He was a member of the Glyn Lyn Baptist Church and the International Brotherhood of Boiler Makers #45. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Joe (Mary) Boothe; and a brother, John (Poodle) Reed. She was the widow of Forest Allen Smith and they were the parents of fifteen children, three of whom preceded her i death, Charles E. Smith, Douglas E. Smith, and Shirley E. Smith. (Ruth) Smith, Mr. James C. Smith, all of Roanoke, Mr. Forest A. (Zenobia) Smith, Baltimore, Md., Mr. Lynwood A. (Adaline) Smith, Washington, D.C., and Mr. David G. (Joyce) Smith, Fort Washington, Md.; also surviving are forty-eight grandchildren; fifty-three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; a host of devoted relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be Friday, 11 a.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. Antonio Thomas will officiate, assisted by Rev. Kenneth Simmons (grandson of the deceased). Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church. Arrangements by Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
