EXPRESS STARS RECALLED BY MINNESOTA

The Roanoke Express announced Wednesday that all-stars Dave Gagnon and Michael Smith have been recalled by the Minnesota Moose of the International Hockey League. Both players are expected to play in the East Coast Hockey League all-star game Tuesday in Greensboro.

Gagnon, a goalie, and Smith, a defensemen, will join the Moose in time for its three West Coast games this weekend. The Express replaced Gagnon by re-signing John Bradley, who compiled an 0-2-1 record with Roanoke before being waived on Tuesday.

The Express also has placed left winger Jeff Jestadt on the 14-day injured reserve list. Jestadt suffered a fractured cheekbone in Roanoke's 6-5 win at Charlotte on Tuesday. The Express moved injured right wing Darwin McClelland from the 14-day injured reserved list to the 30-day list, since ECHL rules permit just one player at a time on the 14-day list.

Roanoke, which plays Saturday at Johnstown, is expected to pick up defenseman Alan Brown from Huntington.

The ECHL announced that Richmond's Roy Sommer, Greensboro's Scott Brubaker, Wheeling's Doug Sauter and Nashville's Mark Kumpel have been chosen coaches for the all-star game. Sommer and Brubaker will coach the East squad; Sauter and Kumpel will guide the West.

Two Timesland schools in Bedford County - Staunton River and Liberty - have been awarded a football victory after it was discovered that Brookville used an ineligible player during the season.

The Bees, coached by former Radford High School player Mark Lineburg, forfeited their seven victories because place-kicker Steve Hawthorne, a transfer from Ohio, lived in the Jefferson Forest school zone.

When Brookville filled in its eligibility slips, it was not noticed that Hawthorne, in moving from another state, had not moved into the zone of the school that he was attending.

Brookville defeated Liberty 24-0 and Staunton River 55-12. In the seven victories, Hawthorne's kicking didn't play a role in the outcome. Staunton River now has a 3-7 record while Liberty finishes 6-4.

Hawthorne, an outstanding wrestler, also participated in several matches including the Iron Man Classic at Salem. He'll forfeit those matches, but will be eligible to wrestle in the 140-pound class for the Bees in the second semester.

John Hawthorne of Roanoke and Michelle Barrett of Cumberland, Md., were selected the outstanding runners on the Virginia Tech cross country teams. Hawthorne finished third at the Metro Conference championships, leading the Hokies to the team title. Barrett was Tech's top finisher in five meets during the season.

VMI will play host to the Virginia Division I Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships this weekend at Cameron Hall.

Defending champion Old Dominion will join teams from George Mason, James Madison, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and William and Mary in competing for the state championship.

The competition will begin Friday at 5 p.m. Championship finals will be at 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5 per day or $10 for a tournament pass. Call Pete Lefresne at VMI Sports Information at (703) 464-7253 for more information.
