WRAY, Bessie Holland, 70, of 114 Meadowview Lane, Rocky Mount, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born November 28, 1924, in Franklin County. She was the daughter of the late John Waller Holland and Mrs. Bessie Lumsoen Holland. She was a retired teacher of 27 years with Franklin County School System. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Rocky Mount, Youth Choir Director, Church Organist, Mary McLeod Bethune Women's Club, Chairman of the Women's Day Committee, NEA, VEA, FCEA, Retired Teacher's Association, National Democratic Party, 1990 Who's Who Among American Teachers, American Business Women's Association, 1972 Outstanding Teachers of America, The Elementary Teachers of the South, The Literacy Smith Mountain Program, Women's Day Chairperson, Leader of the Youth Choir, Organist for the Senior Choir, a member of Junior Chamber of Commerce, Organist Club of Roanoke Valley, a graduate of Bluefield State College, Roanoke Valley Reading Association, attended the University of Virginia. Surviving are her husband, Robert Elmore Wray, Sr.; two daughters, Mrs. Deborah Wray Wilson, Edgewater, Md., Ms. Traketa Kim Wray, Upper Marlboro, Md.; one son, Robert W. Wray, Jr., Bluefield, W. Va.; four sisters, Mrs. Gillie Little, Mrs. Marion Pitts, Mrs. Lucille Johnston, Mrs. Margaret Wainwright, all of Rocky Mount; one grandchild, Christopher Wray, Bluefield, W. Va. BYRD, Dalton Howard (""Cotton""), 73, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 1995, at his home. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the U. S. Navy, he was a 23rd Degree Mason of the Taylor Lodge, Salem, and a member of Kazim Temple, Roanoke. He was a member of VFW, Post #4522, Vinton. He was a member of First Christian Church in South Salem. He is preceded in death by a son, Carlton Richard Byrd. He is survived by his wife, Louise Moulse Byrd; one son, Donald Howard Byrd, Roanoke; one daughter, Suzanne L. Byrd, Northern Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold A. and Hazel C. Byrd, Salem; a sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen Byrd and Jospeh P. Brown; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, January 20, 1995, at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Wayne W. McCauley and Dr. Walter Franke officiating. CLARK, Wilmer B., 75, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995, in a local hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda P. Clark and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church for over 40 years. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Janis C. and Frederick J. Augustine, Roanoke, Karen C. and Donald J. Mathews, Glen Allen; four grandchildren, Matthew Coleman, Michael Hendrick, Eleanor Augustine, William Augustine; stepmother, Louise G. Clark, Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Melvin Huff, Roanoke; one niece, Anne Fizer, Goodview; special friend, Genie W. Rees, Roanoke. COFFEY, William Davis Sr., 79, of Moneta, formerly of Salem, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Marilyn Gale Coffey and Suzanne C. Holland. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Evelyn S. Coffey; a son, William D. Coffey Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda (Joey) C. and Steven R. Brads, Naola, Va.; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; brothers, Cyril Coffey, Towson, Md. and Robert Coffey, Kingsport, Tenn. CONNER, Judith Miller 54, of Natural Bridge, died Wednesday, January 18, 1995, in the Lewis-Gale Hospital. Mrs. Conner was born April 15, 1941, in Maryland and was the daughter of the late Leon Miller and Blanche Lewis Miller Thompson. She was a member of the Natural Bridge Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Henry M. Conner; two daughters, Carolyn C. Johnson, Natural Bridge, Deborah C. Smith, Glasgow; one brother, Kenneth L. Thompson, Jr., Buena Vista; a special sister, Linda T. Hostetter, Glasgow; sister, Sarah T. Campbell, Roanoke; three Grandbabies, Gary Johnson, Jr., Jesse M. EMORE, Anna Mae Kirby, 76, of Lexington, died Wednesday, January 18, 1995, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born in Rockbridge Co., May 29, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Walter Anderson and Eddie May Vest Kirby. Mrs. Emore was a member of Lexington Baptist Church and was the widow of Clarence E. Emore Sr. Surviving are one son, Clarence Edward Emore Jr., Lexington; one sister, Frances K. McKemy, Lexington; one brother, Claude A. Kirby, Harrisonburg; three grandchildren, Timothy E. Emore, Charlotte, N.C., Pamela E. Black, Richmond, Steven W. Emore, Lexington; four great-grandchildren. HAGEE, Thomas Edward, 80, of 2073 Twin Oaks, Pulaski, Va. went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 16, 199 5, at his home. He was born on September 12, 1914 in Wytheville, Va. and was the son of the late Hiram and Ollie Jane Hagee, of Wythe County. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carol Yvonne Hagee, by sisters, Gladys Elkins, Winifred Elkins, Geraldine Elkins, and by brothers, Elmer Junior Hagee, Alonza Hagee, Malcolm Hagee, Ralph Hagee and Herman Hagee. Mr. Hagee moved from Wythe County to Pulaski in 1936, having worked at the Pulaski Veneer Plant and later at the R.C.A. Plant for many years. For 23 years he operated the Texaco Service Station at Fort Chiswell, Va. Surviving are his beloved wife of 60 years, Iris Hoback Hagee, Pulaski; three sons and daughters-in-laws, James Eddie and Connie Hagee, Ft. Chiswell, Va., Richard and Brenda Hagee, Max Meadows, Va., Troy and Penny Hagee, Pulaski; three daughters and sons-in-laws, Doris and Howard Keyes, Leesburg, Va., Elizabeth and Jim wirt, Roanoke, Norma and Tom Johnson, Jonesborough, Tenn.; one sister, Ollie Mae Shockley, Wytheville; one brother, Alfred Devoe Hagee, Salem; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren. He leaves two special friends and nurses, Mrs. Jewel Hill and Mrs. Angie Quesenberry and a host of other family and friends. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel with Pastor Larry Barnes and Rev. Don Stansell officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Wythe County. HERRENKOHL, Anna Marie Ashworth, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995. She was the widow of Roy C. Herrenkohl and the daughter of the late L. J. Ashworth and Florence Goode Ashworth. Mrs. Herrenkohl was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Roy C. Herrenkohl, Bethlehem, Pa., Karl J. Herrenkohl, Pittsford, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Lewis Ashworth, Marion, Ohio; a special cousin, Mrs. Blaine (Jane) Clower, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Thursday, from Boxley Chapel, First Baptist Church, with Dr. Charles G. Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. HYLTON, Roy English, 67, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, January 18, 1995, at his home. Mr. Hylton was born in Roanoke on June 10,1927, the son of the late Roy English Sr. and Gertrude Deaner Hylton. He was a retired Information Service Supervisor with American Telephone and Telegraph. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Madeline Kitts Hylton; three daughter, Connie Hylton Speer and husband, Brian, Fredericksburg, Robin Hylton Boswell and husband, Billy, Crewe, Ruth Hylton Landers and husband, Dave, Raleigh, N.C.; three granddaughters, Kelly S. Marchese and husband, Bill, Louisville, Ky., Lauren Boswell, Crewe, Rachel Landers, Raleigh, N.C.; two grandsons, Kirk Speer, Blacksburg, Les Boswell, Crewe; one sister, Barbara Aliff, Goodview. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, January 19, at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. D. Cameron Murchison Jr. and the Rev. Kathy Carpenter officiating. McPEAK, Erma Lee of Eggleston, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday, January 17, 1995, in Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Erma was born 75 years ago in Gap Mills, W.Va on December 26, 1919, to John and Myrtle Wallace McPeak. She kept a country store in Eggleston for half a century. An avid reader all her life, Erma wrote a local news colum n for the Virginia Leader Newspaper and was treasurer of the Eggleston United Methodist Church for over 20 years. Generations of children and adults spent time in Ermas store cozing up to the pot-belly stove in the winter time or sitting and visiting in the front window. Many a pleasant hour was spent in her store, picking up the mail, buying a few groceries and catching up on the local news. Ermas courage during the four years of her illness inspired and comforted her family. She will be sorely missed by her daughter, Carol, son-in-law, Claude and beloved grandson, Josh Wimmer, all of Newport; also surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Grace McPeak, Warsaw, Ohio; half brothers, Alfred McPeak, Denniston, Ohio, Carl McPeak, Urichsville, Ohio; and her half sisters, Sylvia Van Fossen, Columbia, Ohio, Adeline Dunfee, Bowerstown, Ohio, Connie Dietrich, Urichsville, Ohio, Gladys Dowdy, Eggleston; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 20, 1995 at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel at Pembroke with burial in Birchlawn Burial Peak in Pearisburg. She was the widow of Forest Allen Smith and they were the parents of fifteen children, three of whom preceded her i death, Charles E. Smith, Douglas E. Smith, and Shirley E. Smith. Those left to survive her are six daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Edmonds, Mrs. Letitia Wiggins, Mrs. Shelia (James) Muse, and Ms. Clotiel Jones, all of Roanoke, Mrs. Lola Diane (James) Simmons, Elliston, and Mrs. Alethea (Aaron) Johnson, Germantown, MD; six sons, Mr. Clifford (Helen) Smith, Mr. Ronald C. (Ruth) Smith, Mr. James C. Smith, all of Roanoke, Mr. Forest A. (Zenobia) Smith, Baltimore, Md., Mr. Lynwood A. (Adaline) Smith, Washington, D.C., and Mr. David G. (Joyce) Smith, Fort Washington, Md.; daughter-in-law, Debora Smith (widow of Douglas E. Smith), Roanoke; also surviving are forty-eight grandchildren; fifty-three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; a host of devoted relatives and many friends. SONDHAUS, Edwin J., 75, of St. Louis, Missouri, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995. He was a retired employee of the Wabash and Norfolk & Western Railroads. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Suzanne M. Sondhaus. Surviving are his wife, Marcella M. Sondhaus; his children, Stephen M. Sondhaus, Lawrence T. Sondhaus. VALENTINE, William Charles, 71, of Lexington, died Tuesday, January 17, 1995, at his residence. Born June 19, 1923, in New York, N.Y., he was the son of the late William and Helen Marie Kelly Valentine. Mr. Valentine was a Member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, American Legion, Retired Police Organization #1013 and a former member of New York City Police Dept. Honor Legion.
