PRACTICE RUNS SET AT MARTINSVILLE

Martinsville Speedway will hold Late Model Stock open practices on Saturday, Feb.25, and Wednesday, March 8, in preparation for the March 19 Miller Genuine Draft 300. Gates will open at 7 a.m. for the two testing sessions and practice begins at 9 a.m.

There will be a $10-per-person competitor fee and everyone in the pits must have a NASCAR license. There is no admission fee for fans.

On race weekend, Late Model teams report at 7 a.m. on March 17 for registration, inspection and practice. Qualifying will be at 3 p.m. March 18.

The Miller Genuine Draft 300 will include two 50-lap qualifying races and the 200-lap feature, with the winner receiving $25,000. The race begins at 12:30 p.m.

Charlie Manuel, the Cleveland Indians' batting coach and former Japan baseball Most Valuable Player, will be the guest speaker at the next dinner meeting of the Roanoke Valley Sports Club on Jan.31.

The Salem Civic Center event begins with a 5:45 p.m. social, followed by dinner at 6:15. Manuel, a Roanoke County resident, will be inducted into the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame six nights later.

In Ridgeway, Michael Martin scored 21 points to lead Martinsville to a 71-57 victory over Magna Vista on Thursday night in a Piedmont District boys' basketball game.

Carlos Martin added 15 for the Bulldogs, and Manti Venable scored 12.

Tony Hagwood led Magna Vista with 14 points. Elliot Millner added 13 and Leroy Valentine had 12.
