MONTGOMERY RESIDENTIAL BUILDING SAW BIG '94 INCREASE|

Keeping pace with the New River Valley's recovery from the early '90s recession, Montgomery County posted major increases in residential construction last year.

The county issued 211 building permits for single-family detached homes, a 46 percent increase over 1993, according to a report given to the county Planning Commission this week.

The new-home permits were widely dispersed, planner Jeff Scott said.

Mobile homes also popped up more frequently last year. The county issued 168 building permits for trailers, including 128 on individual lots and 40 in the expanded Twin Creeks mobile home park on Rock Road near Radford. That compares with 115 permits in 1993.

The total number of building permits increased to 381 last year, compared with 261 in 1993.

In other planning news, the county Planning Commission has selected Jim Martin to be its chairman for the year. Martin, the former vice chairman, is a longtime member from the Vicker area who unsuccesfully ran for the Board of Supervisors in 1993. The commission also selected Richard Daub to be vice chairman.
