A story in Thursday's paper said convicted arsonist Luther Brown persuaded Bertie Wheeler to reduce the down payment on the house she was selling him from $15,000 to $6,000.
According to testimony in court, the two made a deal in which Brown paid Wheeler $5,000 toward the down payment and $1,000 for furniture soon after he moved into the house. Brown never paid the remaining $10,000.
