FIRE VICTIM'S BODY IS IDENTIFIED

Police have identified the body of a man burned beyond recognition in a Jan. 13 fire on 13th Street Southwest.

The body of Michael Todd Thomas, 26, of Roanoke was released to his family Thursday by medical examiner David Oxley, Roanoke police said.

The fire started in the second-floor apartment of Barbara Marie Hardy at 414 1/2 13th St. Thomas' body was found on a bed in Hardy's apartment. The body of Hardy, 28, was on the ground outside the building. Police said she appeared to have jumped from her second-story window.

Oxley said Hardy died of smoke inhalation and burns. Thomas died of smoke inhalation.

Police said the fire did not appear to be suspicious.
