VIETNAMESE DENY KILLING U.S. POWS

The Vietnamese government on Friday denied an American researcher's allegation that hundreds of U.S. servicemen were killed in captivity during the Vietnam War.

``Our consistent policy toward the war prisoners was giving them humanitarian treatment and not to kill them,'' said Nguyen Xuan Phong, director of the Foreign Ministry's Americas Department.

Phong was responding to a book just published in the United States, ``Inside Hanoi's Secret Archives: Solving the MIA Mystery,'' by Malcolm McConnell. The book was based on four years of research in Hanoi's war archives by Theodore Schweitzer, a former U.N. relief worker and consultant to the U.S. Defense Department.
