17-0 RUN POWERS TECH OVER UNCC

Virginia Tech went on a 17-0 run at the beginning of the second half to seize control of a Metro Conference game and defeat UNC Charlotte 68-55 on Friday night in Blacksburg.

Angela Donnell led Virginia Tech (13-4 overall, 4-0 Metro Conference) with 15 points and eight rebounds as the Hokies notched their sixth straight victory. Christi Osborne and Jenny Root added 12 points apiece.

UNC Charlotte (9-4, 2-2) got a game-high 23 points from Markita Aldridge.

In other women's games on Friday:

Radford 84, Charleston Southern 47: In Charleston, S.C., the Highlanders used balanced scoring and a hot-shooting first half to win a Big South Conference game.

Radford (5-9, 3-2) outscored Charleston Southern 18-1 in the last nine minutes of the first half to take a 43-18 lead into intermission. The Highlanders shot 57 percent from the field in the first half.

Nicole Gardiner led Radford with 12 points, followed by Sara Larsen with 11 and Rebecca McNeil with 10.

Randolph-Macon 80, Hollins 31: At Ashland, Sandy Crispin had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets (11-3, 9-2) to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory.

Hollins (2-12, 1-10) made just two of 29 shots from the field in the first half and trailed 42-8 at the break. Sarah Kirby had 11 points to lead Hollins.

Men

Washington and Lee 81, Catholic 75: In Washington, Cam Dyer scored a career-high 31 points as the Generals defeated the Cardinals in a non-conference game.

The Generals (7-7) snapped a two-game losing streak.

Sammy Briggs led Catholic (7-6) with 21 points, and Pat Buckley scored 20.

Thursday's games

No. 21 Stanford 78, California 73: In Berkeley, Calif., Dion Cross scored 22 points and Brevin Knight 20 and the Cardinal made all six of its free throws in the final 56 seconds to hold off the Bears in the Pacific-10

A jumper by Jelani Gardner tied the score at 72-all with 1 minute, 14 seconds left, but Cross put Stanford (12-2, 3-2) back on top with two free throws.

Tony Gonzalez missed a shot, and Andy Poppink was fouled pulling down the rebound. Poppink made both ends of a one-and-one and, after Gardner made one of two free-throw attempts, Knight closed the scoring by making two free throws.

Monty Buckley's 18 points led Cal (8-5, 1-4). Gardner added 17 points. Stanford also outscored Cal at the free-throw line, making 19-of-22 to just 5-of-13 for Cal.

Washington State 83, No.17 Oregon 78: In Pullman, Wash., Mark Hendrickson scored nine of his 25 points in the final 1:47 and the Cougars beat Oregon, dropping the Ducks out of first place in the Pac-10.

Oregon (11-2) dropped to 3-1 in the conference, a half-game back of No.4 UCLA, a 71-61 winner over No.11 Arizona on Thursday night.

Hendrickson's run began with a dunk, and he hit two free throws with 43 seconds remaining to put the Cougars up for good 77-76.

Orlando Williams led Oregon with 27 points.
