TOP POINT GUARDS SET TO COLLIDE

WILLIAM FLEMING'S Derrick Hines and Woodrow Wilson's Gene Nabors square off tonight.

The battle of the point guards will be featured in tonight's final game of the Crestar Classic at the Salem Civic Center.

William Fleming's Derrick Hines, one of Virginia's top playmakers, will come face-to-face with Gene Nabors of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, W.Va.

The Colonels meet Woodrow Wilson at 8:30 p.m. to climax a big day of boys' basketball in which four of the Roanoke Valley's top teams take on challengers from outside the area.

Northside (10-2) starts the action at 4 p.m. against Group AAA Northwest Region power GW-Danville (7-6). Salem battles defending Kentucky state champion Fairdale of Louisville at 5:30 p.m.. Host Patrick Henry takes on Page of Greensboro, N.C., at 7 p .m. in the third contest.

Nabors averaged 18 points and 9.5 assists per game last season for a Wilson team that was ranked No.1 and was unbeaten through the regular season in West Virginia. Wilson was upset in the first round of the playoffs when it lost to No.2 DuPont of Belle.

Hines is averaging nearly six assists per game and is one of four double-figure scorers for Fleming, which is 10-1 and is coming off a big victory Friday over Roanoke Valley District rival Cave Spring.

Page, a perennial power in North Carolina, is rebuilding with only one senior starter in 6-foot-2 forward Michael Horney. Juma Jackson, a 6-4 forward, might be a Division I prospect next year.

Patrick Henry (5-8) also is rebuilding behind 6-6 Chris Combs, who is averaging 20.2 points a game.

Salem (6-5), like Fairdale, is a defending state champion.
