DYNAMIC DUO LEADS BYRD TO VICTORY OVER ALLEGHANY

Chris Childress and Michael McGuire scored 21 points each to lead William Byrd past Alleghany 69-54 on Friday night in a Blue Ridge District boys' game played at Dabney-Lancaster Community College.

Childress scored 11 points in the third quarter to help the Terriers (10-1 overall, 2-0 district) stretch an eight-point lead to 16. McGuire made three 3-pointers. Jeremy Obenchain added 14 points for William Byrd.

James Hughes led the Mountaineers (8-3, 1-2) with 20 points. Dusty Rowland added 10.

Salem 92

Rockbridge County 45

The Spartans rolled to a Blue Ridge District victory at home, keeping the Wildcats winless.

Salem (6-5, 2-1), which plays defending Kentucky state champion Louisville Fairdale today in the Crestar Roundball Classic at the Salem Civic Center, had 11 scorers led by Scott Hall's 15 points. Kevin Garst added 14.

Rockbridge County (0-12, 0-3) was led by Jamie Farrell's 12 points.

Buckingham 64

BEDFORD - Five Minutemen scored in double figures, and Liberty put 68 points on the board in the second half in clobbering the Knights in a Seminole District game.

The Minutemen (12-1, 12-1) finished the game with a 38-point fourth quarter.

Gregg Reynolds, who made three 3-pointers, and Mike Padgett led the Minutemen with 15 points each. J.J. Coles added 13 and Zak St.Clair and Steven Shrader chipped in 11 apiece.

Brian Marks led Buckingham County (0-12, 0-12) with 14 points.

Glenvar 70

The Highlanders broke away from the Knights in the second half, outscoring James River 49-14 after intermission, as they cruised to a Pioneer District victory at home.

Glenvar's smothering full-court press in the second half generated numerous turnovers.

James Williams led the Highlanders (8-2, 4-0) with 16 points and five rebounds. Corey Willis added six points and six rebounds.

Curtis Nolan led the Knights (4-7, 2-3) with 11 points and Shahan Burrell grabbed 10 rebounds to go with his seven-point effort in the losing cause.

Tony Joyce scored 13 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter to help the Celtics put away the Eagles in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Joyce hit five of six free throws in the fourth quarter and had 18 second-half points. The Roanoke Catholic defense stepped up, holding Roanoke Valley Christian (9-6, 4-3) to eight in the fourth quarter.

The Celtics (4-10, 3-4) also got 13 points and 10 rebounds from Rod Tasco, and P.L. Bratton had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Eagles were led by Richard Booth, who scored a team-high 17 points - 10 in the third quarter to help RVC take a two-point lead.

Lynchburg Christian 64

LYNCHBURG - Trent Richardson scored a game-high 32 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Bulldogs past the Raiders in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Richardson scored 16 points in each half and made eight of 10 free throws in the second half to help LCA (9-7, 5-4) hold on for the victory.

North Cross (5-7, 3-4) was led by Brian Whitaker, who scored a team-high 16 points. Hal Johnson added 11 points and William Watkins had 10 for the Raiders, who were victimized by poor free-throw shooting, making only five of 16 shots.

Parry McCluer 79

BUENA VISTA - The Fighting Blues jumped out to a 26-8 first-quarter lead and cruised to a Pioneer District victory over the Rockets.

Mike McElroy led Parry McCluer (10-5, 3-3) with a game-high 25 points and Brandon Garrett poured in 19. Carl Sanderson chipped in 12 points.

Robby Huffman led Craig County (3-7, 1-3) with 18 points.

Cave Spring 60

Aimee Beightol scored a game-high 23 points as the Knights rolled past the Colonels in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Beightol scored six of her points in the second quarter as Cave Spring (9-3, 5-1) outscored Fleming 16-4 to take a 12-point halftime lead.

The Knights then hit four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to put away the game. Jaclyn Banks added 12 for Cave Spring.

The Colonels (7-4, 1-4) got 10 points each from Kiann Trent and Felicia Manns.

Roanoke Catholic 46

Roanoke Valley Chr. 36

The Celtics held off the Eagles' fourth-quarter rally en route to a Blue Ridge Conference victory.

RVC (10-3, 4-1) cut Catholic's lead to four points with less than four minutes remaining behind Gina Guthrie. The Celtics (8-6, 6-2) pulled away however with a 39-28 rebounding edge, cruising to the 10-point victory.

Abby Dickson led Roanoke Catholic with 13 points and Christy Hinman chipped in 10.

Rebecca Bryant led all scorers with 15 points in the loss and Guthrie finished with 12 for RVC.

LYNCHBURG - Mandy Britt scored 18 points to lead Bulldogs (9-3, 8-0) past the Raiders in a Blue Ridge Conference game.

Emily Cook and Kathryn Anthony combined for all eight points for North Cross.
