Flu hitting Va. hard, CDC says

The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Virginia is one of only two states to report widespread flu infections.

The CDC defines widespread as outbreaks occurring in areas where more than half the state's population lives.

The influenza virus has spread despite heavy use of the flu vaccine, which is about 80 percent effective against the three strains. ``Starting in late November, we've seen a steady increase in ... documented influenza,'' the CDC reported.

Road to beaches could be tollway

CHESAPEAKE - A major vacation route to the Outer Banks may be expanded as a private toll road, only the second such highway to be built in the state since 1816.

The road, Chesapeake's Battlefield Boulevard, has a rated capacity of 7,500 vehicles per day. But daily traffic on summer weekends has been as high as 28,200 vehicles.

A bill in the General Assembly to allow private companies to submit highway proposals has been offered by Sen. Elliot Schewel, D-Lynchburg. The Allen administration has said it supports the concept.

The only other private toll road in Virginia is the Dulles Greenway outside Washington, which is scheduled to open this year.

Richmond robbery leaves 2 dead

RICHMOND - Two men were shot to death in a convenience store in the latest shotgun robbery in Richmond, police said.

Police were called to the Happy Mart Food Store shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday. One of the victims apparently was the owner of the store, police said. The other victim is believed to have been a friend of the store owner.

Both were shot with a shotgun.

The slayings occurred about 10 blocks from the Jan. 10 shotgun robbery at an insurance company. A worker there was shot in the face and critically wounded.

On Dec. 27, about three blocks from the insurance company, a clerk at a convenience store was shot in the face by a shotgun-wielding robber. He also was critically injured.
